Wright blames fans... and so it begins

I was reading through Pop Culture Zoo and in relation to Jenks comment -

I disagree.

From dictionary.com, science-fiction is defined as, "a literary genre that makes imaginative use of scientific knowledge or conjecture".

Mind you, soap-opera is defined as, "a radio or television series depicting the interconnected lives of many characters often in a sentimental, melodramatic way." - sounds familiar?

SGU does not make imaginative use of scientific knowledge or conjecture at all (it tries to avoid it whenever possible cos as TPTB keeps reminding us, they do not want SGU to be like SG-1/SGA - i.e. with the techno-babble or focus on the ship's technology). So therefore IMO, SGU is not "the best" nor is it "certainly the most true to the genre piece of science fiction on television today", since it's more soap-opera than science-fiction.

But fair play to him, he didn't try to troll bait, unlike Jess there. Overmind One made a good reply and I doubt Jess would have a comeback to that.

Jenks can suck a bag of door knobs, the pathetic, apologist, turd burgler. Nuff said about him.

You're so entirely spot on about the way SGU eschews sci-fi. It's criminal that they keep trying to pawn SGU off as a sci-fi show when it's clearly not. Like the episode where they find the seeder ship and they show Rush the room with all the stargates. He shrugs and basically says 'Big deal!' then they go right back to the bad drama. That scene specifically shows that TPTB don't have any interest in making a sci-fi show. In fact, that scene proves they only want to use the name "Stargate" for cache purposes, but have zero intention of making the stargate anything more than a name.

Hi! delurking to post this

http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/11/0...ame-for-lousy-stargate-universe-ratings/71114

Tvbythenumbers picked up the BW article & wrote a very reasoned commentary as it turns out one of the site's founders, Bob Seidelman, is in the "loved SG-1, liked SGA & can't get into SGU" club & has, it appears been following the situation online.

There's a lot of rational mainstream responses to Bob, which I thought might be of interest here.

First of all, WELCOME!

:welcomewagon:

This is a great find! These articles and the responses which follow them are basically saying the same thing:

You made a show that viewers (Stargate fans or not) just cant get into. So, we are not watching it.

I've been watching the comment section for Wright's foot insertion and outside of a few pleas to start watching sgu because it's AWESOME all I see are statements that the show is bad and boring and that people just can't muster up the interest to keep on watching. Hundreds of these statements.

Wright's moronic statement only gave more proof that fans have turned their back on sgu. It backfired on tptb and the fanboys big time.

The real cause for the decline in ratings is that SGU is so depressing viewers have been committing suicide.

Even one of the characters committed suicide because he was so depressed being on the show.

Thanks for the tip, Licia.

One of the comments in there just made me LOL:

Also, for a show trying to put people further away from Earth than any other SG series before, the characters spend an awful lot of time on Earth. Not the good type of Earth, the magic part of Earth inside the SGC, but the Desperate Housewives type of Earth, minus all the housewives and plus alot of desperation. Thanks for nothing I guess. No amount of lesbians makes a relationship drama any better. Is this the SciFi channel, or the 1st methodist weekly group therapy program?

Desperate Housewives minus the housewives and plus alot of desperation! Man, that person needs to write for SGU to deliver a bit of much-needed humor.

Thanks to all for the welcome! (I'm a refugee from Gateworld when I decamped there last year in the early days of SGU, so nice to find this place now).

My sense is that post the Caprica cancellation Wright et al are in danger of hitting full-blown panic mode. I wonder if there are pending announcement both that MGM isn't going to bank roll season 3 & SyFy isn't going to air the rest of this season because it doesn't make financial sense for them, but might do a January burn off or straight to DVD for the remaining eps. My understanding is that the last ep of the season is being filmed right now - I suspect that once that's in the can so there's a complete set of eps for the s2 DVD they can let the actors go and we'll get the formal announcements.

Welcome to the World of Tomorrow!

It's been interesting, looking over the responses to the orginal article commentary at TVBTN. It does indeed seem as though the vast majority of folks over there are just plain disenchanted, and it's simply comedy relief when you read the occasional "SGU is the best show on television" posts there as well.

Just keep telling yourselves that, people...it's not going to make your show stay on the air...

Welcome Licia! :welcomewagon:

I don't get the argument that SGU is not a "problem of the week" kind of show.
What the heck? Did I watch something else by mistake? When I watched (what I thought to be) SGU they had episodes like Air and Water and Light and whatnot, where they needed something STAT or they would all die horrible gruesome deaths, then they figured out how to get it, got it, and fixed whatever needed fixing. How is that not "problem of the week"?

On the same note I don't understand the argument that SGU is "intelligent and mature". Didn't TPTB specifically say in the beginning that they wanted a younger mainstream audience? How does younger and mainstream translate to mature and intelligent? And the result is definately not mature or intelligent, yet they insist it is.

For once I wish they would use earth logic while dissing us.
It's so hard to get offended when they don't make any sense.

It's hilarious that SteveStrifeX tries to once again push forward the idea that we're on an active campaign to kill the show.

It's always best, I guess, to point the finger wherever you can, and try to avoid the obvious.

Yes! That annoys me to no end. We just sit here with beer and popcorn while watching the show crash and burn on its own merits.

I think that they can make that statement due to a loophole. Because (less than) one episodes' worth of plot is slowly, painfully, glacially, s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d over two-to-three episodes, it's more a problem of the weeks.

Ha! The more the news spread and is mentioned, the more foolish Wright sounds and more people are not buying into that BS no more.

Looks like it's time for a new excuse.

Summary:

That igledhill just pulled the "Wright was misquoted"-BS, go back to bed, igledhill.

Jenks pulled the "they're just not smart enough to watch SGU."-BS.

And how's that working out for the ratings sweet cheeks? If you want to learn something, maybe watch more National Geographic or History Channel instead of SyFy, you might actually learn something and evolve.

Morons.

Yup, this last little tidbit spawned a pile of site comments exposing what a shitty show it is. No lame PR like "Fans look forwards to Season 3". Not if I can help it. Atlantis fans would be happy fans if the U show was worth watching.

Exactly. The show is crap and we all know it. Stop blaming us for your failure.

Here here! They like to chant that we didn't give it a chance, and yet we did. Do they listen? No.

And I still don't get how we're able to "deliberately hurt" SGU. Are we vocal, yes, we are. When you don't like something, it is, I believe, your right to say it out loud. But hurt? Please define hurt and make us a nice little storyboard of how exactly we managed that, because I just can't wrap my head around the concept.

Brad, I don't think that word means what you think it means. Someone get this man a dictionary.

Drax1971: That's cheating! But whatever makes it easier for them to sleep at night, I suppose.

Great posts everyone!

Yes, but not all publicity is good. I think with the amount of comments left being mainly Fu brad I can't see people changing there minds , infact I think his mini rant has firmed peoples opinion to drop the show from there viewing. I would also think those that were hanging in there out of loyalty might be re-thinking that aswell
