Yeah, just a couple dozen episodes.

Don't worry, you've only missed 24 episodes or so, you'll catch up in no time.

I'm sorry. Reading that just made me laugh. I know that it could be a lot worse. There could be three or four or more seasons to catch up on. Two seasons is definitely doable in a short period of time, especially since each season is so short. It just reads funny. :icon_e_biggrin:

The first season is out. Just got mine, finding it to kinda drag. Does it get better? I watched the first season and part of the second still not that into it.
Hmmm...Not sure what to advise here. If you've already seen all of season 1 and part of season 2, then I'm not sure you're ever really going to be into it. Season 3 looks as though they've made even more improvements as far as pacing and character development, but it may not be enough if you haven't already found something to enjoy about the show by now. This is far from being my favorite show ever, but I've found some characters to get into, and I really liked the idea of the show. The only thing that I can think of is to try the most recent two episodes (3x02 & 3x03) on for size, particularly 3x03 (Bank Job). The most recent episode is really more of a stand-alone episode. So, you don't have to be all caught up on everything to understand what's going on.

Have you found anything about the show that you like?

I was someone who found the first few eps dragged hugely, in fact I thought I'd never get in to it and very nearly gave up. The premise for a great show was there but it was pretty dull (a bit like SGU). However a combination of my AT love, finding "Ladon" suprising awesome and that I saw Zalenka and Sarah Strange were going to be in the next one, so I tuned in for that and found it better plot and that I really got the feeling they were trapped in that plane wreck and my interest was really sparked. The next ep was "The Five" which introduced the awesomely charismatic and just plain entertaining Tesla and expanded on the Helen/Ripper stuff and I thought it was very good. Apart from "Warriors" I enjoyed the rest of that season a lot.

S2 had a lot of good stuff, "Eulogy" was just plain heartbreaking, "Parve Nocturnus" spanks SGU hard in how to do bleak and awful "time travel" or apocafic ep (IMO) it's not funny and I enjoy the John and Tesla eps especially. I wasn't a massive Kate fan and overall I thought it lacked cohesion but I did think it was worth an hour of my life every week. Which is the basic measurement of TV success.

S3 I have really enjoyed all the eps so far for different reasons. Drama, character building, realistic continuity, humor, teamy-ness. Yeah I'll keep going with what they're giving me.

In light of current articles I do want to emphasise that the only reason I originally kept going is that I really enjoy AT and other day players like Todd and Ryan Robbins who I knew on BSG as well, that shows TPTB and actors that loyalty has its own rewards, so don't spank fandom in public unless you are sure you don't need them. See Wright; Brad.

Since I got into Stargate quite recently, 5 months to be exact, I watched all 300+ episodes of SG1 and SGA in about 2 and a half months (thank goodness to 2 month holidays, in fact). Just because it was so damn awesome.

Now, that was some catching up to do on my part :)

50 and loved, MAME and Manchurian Candidate
My favorite Mame will always be "Auntie Mame" with Rosalind Russell. She really was a brilliant actress with a sharp sense of humor.

Who can forget that lovely line "Are we all lit?" when the Upsons are at her place to discuss Patrick's engagement to their idiot Boston Brahmin daughter, Gloria, and Mame has set their drinks on fire.

A good Catholic girl, Ms Russell referred to the church she attended in the Hollywood area as "Our Lady of the Cadillacs".

Having a lot of catching up to do is definitely not a bad thing.
I remember years ago that I asked a guy working in a media store if there was any series I could try besides Star Trek.
He came up with Stargate and said I should start by trying out the movie and if I liked it to try the first season of SG-1.
I can't thank the guy enough.
I got hooked and luckily for me there were already five or six seasons of it available.
Everytime I finished watching a season (which took me about two days) I could go back to the store and get some more.
Just awesome.
Good thing I haven't tried BSG, Babylon 5 or V yet. :D

Christopher Heyerdahl's at the Con here in L.A. this afternoon, just before 6pm. If my daughter and I go, that's why we'll be there. :) And if we go, I'm getting pictures of the discussion he does!

Another strong installment of Sanctuary.

Good A and B stories (and again Kate was good). Tesla as always is a treat, and they appear to have listened to the fans again by setting up the restoration of his vampire powers. We have even had a new "villain" introduced. Also, Helen was great in this one, especially when even the hint that Ashley may have been in the lab came up.

Next week looks like they are doing some comedy, which will also be good.

Really Mallozzi should look at Sanctuary for a good example of how to do a show right. They keep the budget low but do it by properly prioritizing where to spend the money. The show excels at "small scene" acting, and this is part sound writing and part having a strong base of quality character actors/actresses to draw on. For example, last week pretty much the whole episode was in a bank lobby, and was carried beautifully by the cast - the cameraderie was apparent and the acting abilities coupled with a sound script were on display. This week there were really two main settings - a cave and a parking lot. Again cast cameraderie and acting skill coupled with sound scripting carried it off.

In it's own way, in spite of the advanced green screen tech used (mostly to hold costs down) the show is actually a throwback to the old days of plot driven TV featuring strong character type actors. And as such it hits a home run.

I'll take your word for it as I have to wait a couple of hours before I can download the latest ep and I'll have to wake up before I can download it which will be somewhere late afternoon tomorrow as it's already 5:30 in the morning here now.
(edit)
I won't have to wait for download since I just noticed it became available some 20 minutes ago but I'll have to wait till I wake up before I can see it.

It was really nice that they mentioned Ashley again, and also revamping Tesla.
Great episode as usual, will post more insights later as not to be too spoilerish.

I cant imagine starting Stargate without the movie first.

I dont know what Stargate would be to me if I hadnt started with the movie first. The movie is the holy grail by which all my other Stargate experience is compared to. SG-1 was to me a spin off from the movie, and for the first two seasons I was comparing "my" Jack to the SG-1 Jack. But then the SG-1 Jack came into his own and he became my new Jack. In the movie, Daniel was my favorite, and the new Shanks Daniel was great right from the first SG-1 episode. Shanks got him down pretty well right from the start. RDA changed my Jack by making him more "human", but that also made him less badass and more emotional. Samantha Carter was a great surprise as was Teal'c. I also liked the idea of Stargate Command, and it was in Cheyenne Mountain.

Something curious...perhaps the access to Cheyenne Mountain (run by the US Air Force) was rescinded when SGU came out? The Air Force would be INSULTED by the portrayal of the military in this show.

Sg-1 Comment and request

SG1 Comment: I loved the SG-1 Jack, and remembered why when seeing a rerun this week of Zero Hour.

Baal: You dare mock me?

Brig Gen O'Neill: Come on Baal you know me...of course I dare mock you!

Request, can we splice off the SG-1 discussion to a new thread so it does not break the flow of the Sanctuary discussion?

Vampires in Sanctuary

I saw in a couple of posts where people noted they don't care for "vampires". Good news: Sanctuary has a completely unique take on vampires so for instance Tesla is nothing like a traditional vampire.

Vampires in Sanctuary are humanoid abnormals belonging to one of two species: Hominus Nocturnus or Sanguine Vampirus. Hominus Nocturnus are predatory humanoids who are adversely affected by sunlight (hence nocturnus). We've heard of them but not seen them a lot. Sanguine Vampirus is the "Ancient Vampire" race. VERY intelligent, strong, no issues with sunlight. The rulers of the Earth in old times but since wiped out by humanity. However, some of the pure blood of the species survived and when Tesla injected it (Season 1 episode The Five) he (because his genetic makeup had the Sanguine Vampirus markers in it) became one. So Tesla is the only current extant member of the species.

Sanctuary really has a good backstory. Episodes like "The Five", "Fata Morgana" and "Revelations" helped flesh it out.

It was an alright episode, but I found last weeks "Bank job" to be a lot better.
Regarding the revamping of Tesla, from what I've seen he's still only a walking magnet and hasn't turned back into a vampire.

I agree - I felt this episode wasn't "enough" - it left me a little unsatisfied. Probably because Tesla isn't "revamped" yet (haha don't Gibbsslap me :P ) - although they planted the seed that he may be a vampire again very soon.

Also, the new villain was a bit underwhelming in my eyes - and the whole "thank you for sharing your pain with me" was sooooo obvious - he said it in such a cliché villany-voice. I don't know how the Big Guy didn't pick up on that one...and then when he pulled the hood down at the end with an evil grin like he was Darth Sidious...*eyeroll*

But I still liked the episode and looking forward to next week! Tesla and Magnus had good onscreen chemistry back and forth with their dialog, and the mention of Ashley was good because it showed how Magnus is still really upset about that (which of course, any mother would be) - but it was a good poignant touch in the episode, without being cheesy.

I liked it rather more.

It had Tesla, and set things up for him to become Sanguine Vampirus again (as stated in original review post). As always, Tesla's rapport with Helen was great, and this time we also got a nice rapport between him and Henry.

The B story was also good, with Kate and the Big Guy meshing together very well. I'd say it is a done deal that they have "fixed" Kate. The new villain was a little cliche, but we also need to remember that we don't even really know he is a villain.

Now I'm waiting for Druitt to show up this season. Given how he was left last season he is especially dangerous, but at least now he knows what drives him to murder and is fighting it.

Big Guy is one of my favorite Sanctuary characters. He reminds me of a Wookie, and looks scary, but he is warm-hearted and sensitive and spiritual. And Tesla is far and away my favorite abnormal in Sanctuary. His humor, his arrogance and deviousness are AWESOME. A good "bad guy" in the best possible balance. And YES, they fixed Kate and I actually like her a lot now. Amazing how quickly they addressed that, huh? Her and the Big Guy bonding was a good feeling. Them watching TV together over popcorn and soda, then sleeping on each other's shoulders was a great scene. Edward plays so well off the other abnormals, but him and Tesla have such good chemistry. This show is younger and hipper than it even needs to be, and its not even trying! I love this show. :)
