In the TOS, Spock was not depicted as a romantic being. Why now?
Ah, I see what you're getting at. I thought you were commenting on Zachary Quinto's screamingly open homosexuality.
As for Spock and women, yes, that is a good question. I'm thinking Abrams wanted the character to struggle with his human half more so than the earlier Spock did. No doubt it's part of the "Let's make everyone a teenager" trend that is happening in movies and TV shows now.
I like Uhura but I think it's dumb to hook her up with Spock. It's way too blatant of an attempt at teen angst drama. The writers probably think the relationship will illicit a lot of "oohs!" but really I think most people just roll their eyes and are bored with it.
Spock isn't a player, everyone knows that, which is why this new iteration of the character works until they get to the romantic scenes with him. I don't care if this is "new canon" Spock. It doesn't work, period.
