"Because once we had him [Carlyle], we found we had a better quality of actors coming in for the other roles."
And I'm in rant mode, seeing that quote again. This is where I got really angry, and it was these sort of comments that made me actually find this site rather than simply shrug, say "Well I didn't like it but good luck guys" and turn off the TV. Those other actors he dismisses are IMHO, one of the main reasons both of the previous shows lasted as long as they did. They took some paper thin storylines and ran with them and created the show. Seriously, if Sheppard/McKay didn't play off together so well, even though I got tired of the McKay show, they'd have been screwed if that didn't happen because the plots going on around them were often barely there. Jason Momoa could do more with a grunt than BJS and his Julliard education have done in 26 episodes.
I've yet to be as impressed with any of the other "higher calibre" actors. Which, really? Yes Ming-na is a name, as is LDP, but that's it really. So was RDA, Ben Browder etc. Beau Bridges wasn't chopped liver either, nor was Picardo and SG-1 especially got very lucky with some famous face guest stars from time to time, more well known that Robert Knepper and "that chick who was on Boston Legal for a season." And really, I bet you're paying these actors that just reallllyyyy wanted to work with Carlyle pots of cash for the small amounts of time they spend on screen. Ming-Na inparticular has to be laughing all the way to the bank for her 2 minutes work per episode.
I think Carlyle is a brilliant actor and I've loved a lot of his other work and he certainly is doing some interesting things wtih Rush, but I'm still not as compelled my him as I should be. Ferriera is ok, from some BTS stuff he seems to be a cool personality. But as to the others, apart from JWS doing som interesting things with Greers 5 lines per ep and awful cliche backstory, I can't say I'll even remember their character names in a couple years, let alone keep an eye out for what they're doing.
Oh, and a final word about angry SGA fans and their magic powers over Neilsen boxes? The ratings for Air prove that it was not successful in pulling in many new fans (2.3 mill) and they've steadily declined since then, so I think that proves that many old Stargate fans did try and give this show a chance at first but tuned out when they realised they didn't like it. I myself gave it far more chances then I would have done any other new show.
