Just watched the first episode of season 2. I'm mildly surprised to say that as far as Star Trek Discovery episodes go this one wasn't half bad. The first thing which made me think "what da, why" was when the "away team" showed up wearing suits in four different colors. I mean, why? WhyyYyYyYyYyyyyYyyy?!?! It don't make no sense. Something else which I didn't like was the scene where the four pods were flying through the asteroids. It's just too much nu-trek and totally not Trek. I don't really have any other opinions on the episode at this point. Except Tilly was a bit annoying again.

I canceled my CBS All Access trial, so I can't watch the show on there. But I will

Wow, there were so many problems I had with this episode, but like you said, it was better than most of the Season 1 episodes.

I would say it was not as awful as Season 1. But really saying that is setting one heck of a low bar to top.

Possibly the biggest issues were the nonsensical plot and the ridiculous focus and adulation of Burnham. She twice lectured people in the episode and once it was Pike (the portrayal of Pike was attenuated but sort of tolerable). I'm sorry but the REAL Pike would have just said back" Excuse me...who started the Klingon War and was responsible for millions of deaths? Why should I listen to you?". And if she kept it up she should have been relieved of duty and demoted to ordinary crew rank.

I don't know about Star Trek Dickscovery but I would definitely watch a Star Trek spin-off with this version of Capt Pike.

He is a great personality in the series, but he is stuck in the Discovery fart cloud. He has the look, the persona and the presence of a Starfleet Captain worthy of the rank. If they put him in a pre-TOS series where he is the Captain of the Enterprise with Spock onboard (not the Sperk soy-based dude they have in Discovery), I would watch.

Episode 4 was kinda good. There were some parts in the episode where I thought it was gonna be bad, but then it still turned out to be good. At least for Star Trek Discovery bench marks. Yep, I didn't really mind this episode at all. Things are definitely looking up for STD. I don't care what anyone else has to say about it. I can watch this and find enjoyment.

Um, okay. :) I am not going to beat anyone up for liking STD. But let me say now that I am more than 95% certain it will be canceled before there is ever a Season 3. It is gathering a small new audience (very very small), but it is not going to be enough.

After the horror of Episode 3, Episode 4 almost had to be better simply because it couldn't be worse. It still had poor acting and a weak script though. And they are still deifying Michael Burnham who belongs in a prison not on a starship.

I am not sure if you saw that CBS All Access had put the Season 2 premiere episode on YouTube for almost two weeks. The response was tepid at best, and CBS left the comments section turned on. Oh my, Doomcock and MechaRandom AND Nerdrotic referred people to it and the comment section was dragging the video over broken glass, hot coals, and razor blades. It was BRUTAL. Today, they removed the video. I got to wondering what happened and why they did that, and a whole different scenario was exposed. Check it out:

  1. CBS All Access and CBS in general is NOT the entity producing this show. They are clients of Bad Robot/Secret Hideout (Abrams/Kurtzman/et al).
  2. CBS owns all of the licenses, including the Paramount limited license.
  3. Kurtzman's production company is the one who loses if Discovery is canceled, not CBS.
  4. The shilling in support of STD is being paid for by Kurtzman's production company, not CBS.
  5. CBS needs to be convinced that Kurtzman and associates can deliver a viable and profitable Star Trek before they greenlight the Picard show, any further seasons of Discovery, and any of the announced Star Trek projects that Kurtzman has mentioned.
  6. The Picard series has NOT been greenlit yet. Season 3 of STD has NOT yet been approved. No budget or casting has been done for the Picard show or any other Star Trek project.
Kurtzman has his own spin doctors selling his Star Trek to CBS like Brad used to have to do for MGM. His future is not certain. I have access to much deeper information considering where I work now, and I can go where the writers hang out now that I know where that is. :). The few producers I threw this at where I work said that "ramp up" would have started already if there was going to be a Season 3 of Discovery, and that I should bet on a cancellation.

I did, and the results were hilarious. I am one of the regulars over at Nerdrotic on Gary’s live streams and when he covered this putting an episode on YT it was funny as all get out.

I think CBS is seeking feedback other than the echo chamber Kurtzman has build around his "star trek". I think they were wanting the raw, un-shilled feedback from Star Trek fans who aren't being paid to say good things about the show. The Rotten Tomatoes scores for Season 2 are even worse than Season 1 (both the critic rating and the user ratings).

This spells almost certain cancellation of this show once this season is aired. There was a new episode added to Season 2 at the end, which I suspect is the show wrap up. Given the poor performance of this show, and the already negative predictions for the Picard show, I think Kurtzman's days are numbered in terms of deciding the direction of Star Trek, despite his recently signed 5 year deal. This would mean there might not be a Picard show or a Michelle Yeoh Section 31 show. The animated comedy series is probably a go, but it isn't under Kurtzman's umbrella. I also hear that money is being scraped together to produce Star Trek 4 by "investors" after Paramount shelved it. There is no fan campaign to save the Kelvin movies. What a colossal waste of time on this alternate NuTrek crap!

Midnight's Edge does a deep dive here and shows what has gone wrong with Star Trek and that yes, STD is being made under the Paramount license despite it being CBS. They also show that we may be coming out of the darkness soon.

That must be the video Doomcock was talking about that vindicated him. :)

the obnoxiousness of this commercial is outstanding

"F you, we will put on whatever we want,F over any remake we want, no matter what you say or how few subscribers we have"

to have the commercial star a STD actor speaks volumes on their betting it all on one show

The bottom part of that screencap, "Telly's Take" about them getting a renewal because it is the flagship...I disagree. The show is too expensive, and it is not performing it's mission as being a "flagship". I just watched that CBS All Access ad with Sonequa Martin-Green, and although she is gorgeous, the service is mediocre at best. It isn't even on Hulu level. All old CBS stuff that is very cool (some of it), but not worth subscribing to.

My take:

Star Trek Discovery will be canceled after the season has aired, and another project will either begin production towards the end of Season 2 or there will be a break and the next show we get could be Picard. Keep in mind, CBS All Access has been online since 2014, so any thoughts of it being a newbie getting it's legs is a weak argument for their under performance.
