SGU didn't use to be in that category. A little over one year ago no one would even dream of comparing ratings for a Stargate show with a low budget show like Sanctuary - or Merlin. So why is it a big deal now? Soon we'll be gloating about how it's beating Quantum Kitchen?
Anyway, I hope we'll find out soon
All I'm saying is that it's odd to laugh at SGU's ratings and claim it has few fans then support Sanctuary as a fan favourite. Budget is irrelevant when we talk about popularity.
It was only "great" as SGU episodes go but it was average as SG-1 and SGA episodes go. I think it's funny that you're such a big fan of SGU but then you gush about an episode that has the story telling and pacing of an SG-1 or SGA episode. What I'm saying is the reason you liked it so much (and me too I guess) is because it had the tone and feel of an SG-1/SGA episode and was not the standard dark, boring, slow, emo drama familiar to SGU.
I don't want to put words in your mouth so if you don't concur with this assessment please tell me where I went wrong. Thanks.
The reason I liked this episode wasn't just down to the pacing - I thought what they did with the characters was great too. The ensemble was the best its ever been and thats not something you can lift form another show. I enjoy the slower character moments too (i.e. Trial and Error is one of favourite Stargate episodes) so it's not like I'm opposed to the slow drama.
I've said this before though - I think SGU has too slow a pace. Being a fan I don't mind it as much, but for the audience at large, the show needed to be tighter. This episode addressed that. And while those slower moments are great, a faster pace gives emphasis to those moments, it makes them mean more to the viewer.
But lastly you have to remember I don't hate SGU - I still judge every episode as simply "Did I enjoy this Stargate episode?". Stuff like the mid-season two parter may have been closer to Atlantis/SG1 but it still didn't work on the whole and made for some average episodes.
