In comparison to normal, not famous everyday guys, he is relative good looking. But when you compare him to most other young male actors on TV, he is just lacking. He is just not as good looking and hot as a lot of other young actors.
I'm going to be OBJECTIVE HERE!

I was looking at some pics of him on google.

There is a younger face one which is cute enough, clean cut typical American boy next door. Then the SGU ones gives him a jaw line plus the fact he isn't brown enough it makes him look less attractive.

I think it's all in the lighting and makeup, because in other pics of him, he has that Jensen Ackles look but yet when he looks bored or doesn't utilise the lighting to his advantage (i.e. looks away from lighting), he has this harsh look which makes him look unattractive. If he soften his face a little, I think it would help.

He looked cute in his first independent film - "Hate Crime" where he played the character "Trey" all thanks to the younger face look.

Gosh, I could be the next Tyra banks.

Dude!!
My wife would seriously slap you for comparing BJS to Jensen Ackles!:argue:

Not only that Jesen can actually act AND be funny!

I think the lighting on the ship does nobody any favors what so ever in the looks department. In the normal lighting of "Cloverdale" everyone looked a lot better, including Scott.

Sorry, had to comment on the looks issue.
Maybe it's because I'm female, but for me attractiveness is NOT all about how beautiful/handsome someone is. That's just a part of it, and I think not even a very important part.
I've found loads of men attractive who don't fit into the mainstream concept of handsome or even good looking. And the women I find most attractive always have some unusual, even "unattractive" feature that makes them unique.

When I really like someone, when they make me laugh and I want to spend time in their company (even if it's just a show on tv) they become attractive to me. I don't know how usual this is, so I can't say I speak for everyone, but I'd like to think I'm not alone in this.

It sounds like a cliché, but what's inside really *does* count.
A character with no soul, no personality other than 'likes to whine a lot', no motivation, no personal moral code, and no sense of humour is never going to be attractive to me, no matter how good they look.
It is visible through the camera when a character is just a pretty face with no substance. And that pretty face is just not enough.

I totally agree...especially about the whining part! ;)

as for BJS in the looks department...does absolutely nothing for me. i imagine he is a great hit among the young High School Musical fans - he has that "look", but then when my friends were drooling over Donny Osmond I was drooling over Lee Majors (AKA the six million dollar hunk! ;) ) -I never was a typical teenage girl I guess. ;)

Hey!!

In defence of the (straight) male side of the forum.
There may be tons of "celeb hotty females" (or even regular "hotties") that I might give my left nut for some "alone time" with, but when it comes to marriage/ long term commitment, at the end of the day you are marrying a personality, not a body. Guys may place an initial, inordinately large amount of attention to the physical traits of a woman, but if there is no deeper connection, even guys will get bored (and quicker than most woman will believe) of the "same old thing".

Call me stupid but I have a real problem with someone who plays a character in a SCIFI-show chatting about his hate of SCIFI. Okay, not his fault that he was casted. On the other hand ... why he went to the casting when he hates SciFi? Didn't he knew for what show this casting was? Ahm ... oookay ... maybe the open stage for American (Canadian) Idol was next door? Or the Shakespeare (by the way, I enjoy a good Shakespeare production) Society had another casting for "Hamlett" in the same building?

Sorry, when there is something I do not wish to do I will not do it.

I think Fizz response pretty much covered it: a steady acting job on a reasonably successful franchise with long history & pre-existing fanbase (which watches live TV, buys DVDs etc., and attends con) can only be a good thing for his career. Until SGU happened... LOL!

Of course in the long term, personality outweighs looks. But right now, SGU characters haven't given us anything to like about them personality-wise. They're all back-stabbing, self-centred SOBs.

In SG-1, from right off the bat, you can see O'Neill is an odd but funny fella, Carter who stands by her womanhood and she gets strength from knowing she is just as good as the best of the USAF, remember her -

"I'm an Air Force officer just like you are, Colonel. And just because my reproductive organs are on the inside instead of the outside, doesn't mean I can't handle whatever you can handle."

How sexy was that speech, and I bet a lot of female viewers got empowered by that and had took immediate liking to her. Hell, some turn into a lesbian cos of this, but it shows from the get go, the personality is there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQNdPR_y6EQ

But SGU characters has yet to show me anything empowering about them other than they all like backstabbing each other and are slow-coaches, taking forever to do anything. If I got them in my office, I would have fired them on the spot. That leaves just the
looks to comment on. How does the saying go, "Make a good first impression"?

Hey guys! Thanks, I spoke from the heart.

And Gatefan1976, I apologise if I seemed to accuse men for being shallow, that was not my intention. I know some pretty wonderful men. (Cue the Pythons: "Some of my best friends are witches. Really they are. They're very nice.")

Tropicana: That was my point exactly. The characters in SGU have nothing going for them except their looks, and the looks mean nothing without substance. Personality is thin on the ground onboard the Destiny. And where there IS personality, it's always off-putting (Rush, anyone?)
So I kind of understand the focus on their looks in posts and reviews. What else is there to talk about, after all? Plot?
And I agree with you about SG-1. I loved the characters from the get go, because they were good people and they had backbone. Same goes for Atlantis.

Group hug? :D

I guess he was thinking it was better than bartending, which is what he was doing at the time of his audition, IIRC. Plus at the time the producers and everyone were thinking it was supposed to be the next huge cult thing and would open up a ton of doors in mainstream Hollywood and everywhere else like what has happened to the cast of BSG.

I don't think he's bad looking, but I don't really find him that attractive either, in fact all the guys are distinctly lacking compared to SG1/SGA

A shrinking violet like him in Hollywood? Suddenly Malibu-Stacy comes to my mind. Without her he never would do only an hour in Hollywood. From what I've heard it's really tough there, ways too tough for mummy-boys like him.

About the looking ... not my taste, nope. He is too young and ... don't know exactly how to discribe ... he isn't attractive for me. It's something about ... uhm ... realy hard to describe ... I would say a kind of aura, something some persons (not only men) have, others not. It's not because I'm a JF-fan, I'm also a big fan of Robert Davi (he was my first reason to spent a look at SGA) and he isn't really handsome or pretty. But he has something for me that makes him attractive. BJS lacks here for me but I know some fans of him.
What's interesting there is that this girls (actually really Teenies) became fans of him after they have rewatched the first season. At the first look they did not really liked him. Mh, maybe I'm too old. If I would find him attractive I would feel like a pedophile :icon_e_ugeek:.

He said in an interview once the show was likened to "Southland" to him, which drew his attention.

Mh, never seen Southland so I cannot judge the show. But as far as I know Southland is a Cop-/Crime-show (it was in PayTV on RTLCrime in Germany). To compare a SciFi-show with Cop/Crime is a little bit weird I think. Okay, after Vegas we all know it is possible. But from my own ... good God, what I have to think around edges by writing the SGA/CSI-crossovers! I know why there is a F-304 big plothole in Vegas ;) and McKay had not the trouble with the original CSI-characters, only with negative-Shep.

I know BJS is a fan of FNL (FridayNightLights). Well, I like that show too but it isn't really outstanding and somtimes these whole teeny-problems-trash does not really care for me. Okay, I'm a true fan of Kyle Chandler and that's why I'm watching FNL. And some of the adult storylines are intelligent. Not all but some ...

I think it's all in the lighting and makeup, because in other pics of him, he has that Jensen Ackles look but yet when he looks bored or doesn't utilise the lighting to his advantage (i.e. looks away from lighting), he has this harsh look which makes him look unattractive. Don't compare apples to oranges! Jensen is a good actor who's looking well and who is smart and has a good taste in humor (and music). There is simply nothing he and BJS has in equal ... isn't Jensen some years older? Or did he start his carreer so early?

BJS is perfect for the poo! ;)

BJS reminds me of that character from "Galaxy Quest" played by Alan Rickman, "Sir Alexander Dane" who was a Shakespearian trained actor who loathed being known for playing a character on a sci-fi show ala "Star Trek". The character's arrogance, egotism and pomposity was hilarious because it was fictional, but BJS shows many of the same traits and that isn't funny, it's sad. Hopefully the boy will pull his head out of his ass one of these days.

that character was supposedly based on Leonard Nimoy...he disliked being type-cast as much as shatner did. ;) BJS isn't the caliber of either of them! :P

I don't know how big his girlie fanbase really is. Maybe some people find him attractive but not me! He looks like a little boy - not attractive in the least :puke: Heck I find Robert Carlyle (as Dr. Rush!) more attractive than BJS. Of course neither of them comes near the level of hotness of say, Momoa or Flanigan, or any of the other sexy men on SG-1 and SGA.

yeppers I must agree...nothing is hot in sgpoo except the pile of turds. :P

Not offended in the slightest. As much as people love to rail against the "stereotype", there is usually a damn good reason why they exist in the first place, :P
