You are 100% on the money with this. We have all seen this one play out before. This one is different only in one way: They got one season past the originally contracted 2 seasons PROBABLY specifically to wrap it up, but POSSIBLY to get a 4th season (if it had done great). They should have marketed season 3 as the "final season" (because that is what it really was). The show is cancelled, but we just have not gotten the announcement yet.

I suspect the amount of money the producers poured into this thing gave them leverage to get a third season. It was something like 170 million or more, wasn't it? (game included) That's a lot of scrilla so I suspect they had wiggle room when it came to season 3.

I agree. I think that those who invested heavily (Trion, particularly) needed for the show to stimulate sales of the game. Ater they made it free, the in-game purchases were still happening. I understand why they did not "officially" end it, but from what I am reading about the last episode, most everyone understands that this show is probably over. I will only watch after it has been canceled.
The crazy thing is if they had thought it out better initially this could have been a really good show. And it could have lasted longer too. The production values were there. The story wasn't thought out very well though, and that is what doomed it if you ask me.
Yep, writing is what killed Defiance.
Actually had they explained the world of the show earlier it would have helped the show a lot. The other issues we saw in season one (pacing, characters with no definition, excessive shipping) were actually largely cleaned up in the second season. And the acting has always been decent to good.
In a way the Omec are the writing issue with Defiance in a microcosm. They were introduced with some mystery about them but as the season went along they started to become interesting - chiefly because the character of Tevkin actually had a good arc. Then at the end they just screwed them up, starting with Kindzi murdering Tevkin. It's like they can come up with cool ideas but have no clue on how they should play out.

Both SGA and SG-1 were canceled in the middle of the last season. SGU was canceled after the second episode, but MGM had a two season minimum run.

Yes it was, they announced the cancellation after episode 2 of SGU's second season. But it had actually been cancelled before that and Brad was trying to save it.

I don't think it will be cancelled. We had to wait a month for the last season to be renewed. Defiance is #2 on the top rating list for syfy. Z nation, dark matter, and killjoy have all been renewed so this would be too. What a pity though.

Our cancellation rationale is based upon the cost to produce DEFECATION. All the other shows on SyFy seem to be produced at a much cheaper level than this one. Of course we can't know for sure until the official word comes down about it.
They have hedged their bets and given a series finale that could be continued (if necessary). Maybe they could do a TV movie. But the numbers and production values probably canceled this and we just have not gotten it officially.

I realize that the budget for this show is significantly more than other shows - though their CGI is terrible to say the least, but that 100+ million dollars or so was shared between the game and the tv show. Plus, this show is licenced to other countries and other subsidiaries of syfy. People are also watching it/downloading it on iTunes/amazon which would also contributing factor.They also wouldn't just ignore the fact that it's the second most rated show on syfy. Cancelling it would be suicidal for the network.
If it is renewed, they will probably shorten the season or give a movie. I would be glad when this show is cancelled. I mean, I don't like this show which is why I haven't bothered to post anything, but shows usually get cancelled mid season or early on in the season with syfy.

Just to let you guys know , the town site is still being guarded and no sign of being struck yet so there may be a season 4 coming up sadly ...Oh well . On the bright side it gives people some work and since my daughter is trying to work her way slowly into the business ,,, good on them .... I will update if I see some stir ...
