I thought I would actually start an appreciation thread for an actor of SGU being Rob Carlyle (ok, maybe that's just me being a typical jingoistic Brit but I can't help it).

I thought it would be good to find some clips or interviews pertaining to the actor himself. The main reason I decided to start this thread was because I was looking on youtube to listen to some bands I like when I re-stumbled across this old Oasis video which I totally forgot had Rob in it (never knew why it did in the first place).......... turns out it was just a cameo (much like the SG-1/SGA actors in SGU but I digress).

Anyhoo, enjoy the awesome Britrock.

I actually quite like his acting. Ravenous and Hitler were very very well acted (and oddly humourous in a way he can be so evil but at the same time, so amusing)

It pains me to see him in SGU. He's above this shit and he's totally not giving it his all in the acting. It might just be that the directing is terrible, but he's got talent, he just doesn't seem to be using it for SGU.

You are totally right, I regret in my review for the season 1 episode Human that I made reference to Rob's "poor acting". On reflection the acting he displayed at that particular point in the episode was not due to his ability but was because his acting for that scene was only as good as it possibly could have been given the writing of the episode & the lines/scenario/bullshit-drama-circumstances with which he had to work. That is why I started this thread, my reverence for the actor himself & as a retraction for what I had said previously - figured I would kill 2 birds with one stone.

Robert Carlyle is a good actor. He is not a GREAT actor, but he is good and he is the best actor on Stargate Universe. But alas, having him on the show is like casting Jack Nicholson in a high school version of Pippin. I know the reason he was chosen was because he specializes in dark and gritty drama (like Trainspotting), and he has a following in the UK and the EU in general.

But what could Jack Nicholson do with a high school cast and director for Pippin? Robert Carlyle is doing what he can with the scripts and the show and the character, but he can only do so much whilst having such amateurish and unprepared writers writing for him.

I just hope it doesn't harm his career because he's a very well loved & respected actor over here.

Without a doubt, this is just my favourite scene that he has been in to date:

True...

True! SGU doesn't do Robert Carlyle justice. Probably anybody who's watched any movie with him will attest to this.
So what are his fans and followers to do? Believe that everything he touches is great, close their eyes and ears and pretend that SGU is excellent drama... or watch (or not) in disgust and demand that he leaves the shitty show asap??

The latter ideally ;)

Like you, I am also a bit of a drama fan. But when I want drama I watch it, and I dont classify drama as being science fiction. Science fiction with good drama is always a good mix, but science fiction still has to be mostly science and exploration for me, and use the drama to flesh it out. Stargate Universe is a drama, but set in space. Not really science fiction.

I keep saying this same thing over and over about SGU being a soap because of movies like The Abyss and TV series like Star Trek Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5 which were without a doubt science fiction, but had lots of good drama. SGU seems to be a disjointed mismatch of heavy soap drama, dark and boring spaceship sets and an empty, lonely universe with uninhabited planets. How is Robert supposed to work with this?

I dont think this will hurt Robert's career when SGU is canceled later this year. It will be seen as a misstep, and Carlyle fans will do their version of "writing it out of Carlyle canon". I am already waiting for somebody who writes fanfiction to come up with a story which believably wipes Stargate Universe from Stargate canon so that all the events never happened. Carlyle fans will see the Rush character much like Louis Ferreria probably does not count his portrayal of the talking tree Treevis in Star Trek Voyager: One Upon A Time as a "character cameo".

Well like I said in my review, Robert's portrayal of Rush coming to terms with seeing his wife die a 2nd time in the episode I reviewed was very good & believable acting on his part which, as I more or less stated in the review, was the most emotional, well-acted & convincing drama-acting I have seen in the show to date.

He has nothing to be ashamed of with regards to his performance on this show but rather shame for association with the show itself.

You know whats really sad to me. You see interviews with LF and he's such a larger than life personality, yet he is stuck with such a negative, emotionally damaged persona in Young.

Back on topic.....
Rob Carlyle is quite a good actor, but I do wonder if he was cast well. To continue you Jack Nicholson comparison, the minute you see JN in "the shining", you just know that the character (jack torrence) is going to be an utter nutjob, which is sad because in the book Jack starts of sane and gradually looses his marbles. I feel the same way about RC, the minute you see him you know he's going to be a conniving bastard because of his "look". I think the character of Rush would have been mildly interesting if you just didn't know from the start he was going to be a bastard.

The thing which gets me thinking is whether or not Rob Carlyle would have been able to read his own character's p-file & it's lines & realised how bad it was going to be prior to accepting the part....... I'm guessing that during casting, it wasn't made entirely clear the interactions between his character & the other characters & the weaving of his character into the plot via circumstance (neither of which seem realistic or to flow naturally IMO) which leads me to believe that he was only given basic info as to what he was getting into. Whatever he decides to do, be it for his own benefit or for that of TPTB I hope his career remains intact (although martyring himself for the purpose of loyalty is a good way to go) I really hope he survives the coming disaster.

I will respectfully disagree with you on this. I have seen him in one movie (had to look him up on IMBD to find that out!:P) - it was Eragon. Even though he played the main bad guy it was a forgettable performance...but then Jeremy Irons was in it and he tends to always deliver a standout performance! :smiley_squee:

I think he is like Peter Fonda...erstwhile "star" of the epic  MegaFault on Syfylys....did the movie for the money (and for Rc- to gain some "name recognition" in the USA). i know the brits love him, but he's mostly unknown in the USA (IMHO based on my friends and family). So an American tv show would be helpful, and a steady paycheck is not to be sneezed at in this economy!;)

I'd never heard of him before SGU, so his reputation doesn't really help me to appreciate his acting on SGU. I'm from the U.S.A.
I do remember really liking The Full Monty, though, so I must have thought he was pretty good, I just wouldn't have connected the two if I hadn't read it on Stargate fan pages.

That WAS him!

He played a great Bond villain in The World Is Not Enough. Here is a clip from near the end of the film ( the last 3-4 minutes are the best ). It also has the added bonus of Denise Richards in a tight white t-shirt that gets wet.

I have had him in my Bond Collection all this time! I have been in love with Denise Richards since Starship Troopers, but I never would have connected Carlyle to the Bond franchise until you mentioned it! It shows he has a wide range of talent.

I think the dynamic of the show would've been a bit more interesting if Eli and Rush's personalities had been swapped. I mean, the Rush character works for the most part (aside from when the writers force him into the wrong for the sake of drama), but honestly, how often do we see older middle aged loners being bitter assholes on TV? Giving Robert a more optimistic character (preferably one who's not as annoying as Eli) would've given him more to do, since he's not even giving the show his R game most of the time.
