well they are not - they were made to be. as it seems that Tolkien's final decision (as close as he got to one) as published in HISTORY OF MIDDLE EARTH series is that orcs are tortured and changed Elves, they were originally born as not evil- they had a choice as all 'children of illuvatar' do, however most who became Orcs did not have a choice - they were captured and made into what they are

IRL comparisons- Orcs are soldiers of a evil power; were the members of the Wehrmacht (NOT SS)- or better, are the current rank and file of the Russian army 'necessarily evil'?

And as this guy 'nerd of the rings' so aptly wraps it up in this video, there are many examples of Orcs wanting something more than just being soldiers of Morgoth or Sauron. It even partly made it to Jackson's movies

And many forget that the manner in which we see Saruman 'hatching' Uruk Hai in the movies is completely wrong and not in keeping at all with Tolkien. yet i do not see the current mob of "anti's " saying a thing about that or any of Jackson's other sins

and on how Orcs look, we largely have the imaginations of various artists and then Jackson's orcs as the 'standard' for how they look

in Tolkien's 'reality', Orcs would look more like Adar

a big problem is modern perceptions of Tolkien based on art and films, which themselves misrepresented Tolkien's work

NOW THERE is plenty wrong with this show, the biggest issues to me are the reasoning for the fading of the elves = connection to Mithril. and the apparent absence of Galadriel's husband, overall, it is ""in keeping" with Tolkien's work esp since it is set in the second age of which he only wrote so much source material -all very limited

also, they are prevented from directly naming or referencing any first age occurence other than what we did see- like Galadriel in Amman and the mention of Beleriand and other first age place names. that automatically untethers things a bit

still wondering where that bit will come in- the part from a casting call that made so many people upset yrs ago

the one that went something like "" needed.. extras to play roles in a fantasy series.. must be willing to wear prosthetics/ heavy makeup daily and to be willing to be in scenes involving murder/ public sexual activities, etc""

the only thing i can think of where that might fit is the Fall of Numenor and how ar pharazon brought a captured Sauron there who basically wormed his way into the Court and caused society to totally fall

I have been rewatching The Hobbit on Prime

I think I have found another reason why so many people have a "Galadriel" problem. (NOT people here)

It is obvious many of them are only basing their comments and building their bias about her from watching Jackson's movies; movies where Jackson committed many 'sins' against the source material. Maybe even worse thaN Rings of Power since they have to fill in large holes in the source material while Jackson had 4 books and a huge appendices and many other of Tolkien's works to help him

- Galadriel is NOT a sorceress, she has no magical powers of her own. Her powers are her long lived life which began in Aman in the Light of the Trees. by the time of the Hobbit there are few Elves in Middle Earth who had been in Aman and seen the Trees. It is implied by Tolkien that their simply being in Aman in the Light blessed them with greater health, vigor, ability to overcome wounds and greater intellect- much of that simply from being able to interact daily with the Maiar and Valar.

her main powers we see her have come from her Ring.

In The Hobbit, when the Dwarves arrive at Rivendell, and the White COuncil is also there (not in the book) we see Galadriel speaking with Gandalf privately. He is basically cowering before her, in a positive way. He has no reason to do this. He is Maiar, in our common words- the equivalent of a higher angel or demigod AND he also has a Ring of Power. he would never bend to a Elf or Man, and certainly not be tricked by them, unless he wanted them to think he was

then we see her basically disappear from him, Tolkien never wrote that she had that power, no one had that power, only a person wearing the One Ring could.

JACKSON'S movies pump up her character so much that it is totally understandable that when she is shown in Rings of Power, the way she is described in books like the Silmarillion- a great leader, but not 'magic'- that people whose only knowledge of her is from Jackson would be let down, severely.

Jackson more or less mad her into a type of Mary Sue, like he did with Arwen and then the made up she elf character, tauriel in the Hobbit- giving them powers they simply did not have per Tolkien

also with the Hobbit, they have Thranduil portrayed wrong. when he is talking to Tauriel about how Legolas has a crush on her and to that he would neve rallow them to marry because she is a Silvan Elf.. well, so is he.

they imply that he is a high elf, like Galadriel or Gil Galad. his people never left middle earth for Aman, and he was born in a forest realm of Doriath himself NOT nobility at the time.

his ability to show his wounds from dragon fire? Per Tolkien, he would have never been in a situation where he faced a dragon, and being a silvan elf without those "extras" high elves had, had he been burnt by dragon fire he would likely have died

LOTRs were ok, with forgivable changes, add ons, hobbit is basically a near complete retelling of the book, and it doesn't get the criticism that it should YET serves as a standard for what following Tolkien based shows should be like

in Rings of Power S2 finale, stating that the wandering stranger is Gandalf- well they strongly imply it don't they? Doesn't make sense. but so many of the changes and add ins to Jackson's movies didn't make sense per the source material either.

for a better story, they should have him be Saruman- since per Tolkien we know he arrived before Gandalf and wandered in the East for centuries working with men and possibly with the blue wizards

we know that Saruman had only recently turned evil in LOTR's, NOT 2000 yrs earlier. It would be better to show him doing good things as he and the other Istari were charged with doing-- then turning evil later

but you watch, they will have the stranger be Gandalf and the other 'evil' wizard be Saruman

when they should both be blue wizards

and none of the Istari arrived in middle earth via meteor. They all came by boat from Aman and arrived at Cirdan's dock
