That last line combined with your sig is just disturbing dude

*Serious mode engaged*

To be fair to JM, he has had a hand in some of the better eps in SG1/SGA and can write decent "action/adventure" eps. The problem is however, unlike someone like Stephen king who describes his OWN writing as the "Mcdonalds of fiction" he seems to not recognise when his reach has surpassed his grasp. To me that is the greatest tragedy of SGU. The premise is all there, the story could have been brilliant, but as JF put it so well, "ego and vanity" got in the way. SGU is like reading a 12 year olds re-write of James Clavell, JRR Tolkien or William Gibson, and just as painful.
GREAT analogy Gatefan!! :jackanime14:

THAT is what befuddles me the most about this show!!!

My sig line is from a Justin Bieber song, yo! Pure words of wisdom. I suggest you live by them.

RE: the 12yo doing a rewrite of something classic, at least the 12yo has an excuse for being unable to complete the task, JM not so much. Perhaps JM is too close to the flame that he can't get perspective and see anything else (you said he was capable of better) but that's where others like Brad Wright come in. They are supposed to be the outside perspective that sees things that are right or wrong and then takes action to correct them. How can SGU go two full seasons without someone high up on the production staff not saying anything about the obvious train wreck that it is? How is it no one else associated with the show has pulled JM off to the side for a little meeting to straighten things out?

This show is truly composed of a confederacy of dunces, Mallozzi just being one of them.

EXACTLY! Is he so surrounded by Yes Men that everybody around him told him that SGU was awesome and PERFECT because they were afraid for their jobs? Mozz has shown signs that he is a vindictive man who holds grudges (look at how he treated the Atlantis actors). I mean, how can it be possible that NOBODY in the entire production staff opened up their mouths and said "Joe, I think you need to make some changes...the fans are not gonna like this much". Did NOBODY tell the little emperor that he was wearing no clothes? Im sure there were fans from the previous two shows who are still with the production...why didnt they warn him? The fans did. The fans knew before the first episode of SGU aired, and they told him. That is why I dont feel sorry for them at all and also why I think its time for them to move on. They are clueless.

Self-imposed limitations is right.

Why on earth they decided they could not do X, Y, or Z is beyond me. There was so much to explore!
It's like JM and friends were afraid to get out of the car because the parking lot is so big!

There were so many opportunities to cross that line and do something "edgy" like they like to call it.

Case in point, the episode of SGA where Sheppard gets his hand chopped off by Kolya. I hoped it was real, and that when he'd get back to Atlantis he would eventually get an awesome Ancient tech based prosthetic hand that could do all sorts of things like, I don't know, shoot laserbeams out of the fingertips, store data (USB sticks anyone?), interface with computers and gates, pick locks, and be really strong so he could open all the really hard to open jars on the base? Yay, pickles are back on the menu guys!

It would, of course, malfuntion every now and then, download a few viruses and generally be suspected evil because it once squeezed some lemonjuice into McKay's lasagne and it definately knows more about Atlantis than it's letting on. Yes, I'm still talking about the hand.

Okay, my examples are crappy but you get the point. I'm sure they could have come up with some neat stuff.

But of course it turned out to be a dream or a hallucination or whatever.

I don't think that fans demanded they stay within the safe-zone.
It was just the parking lot, you know. It's really big.

And this post will teach me to write opinions on a public forum when I'm half-asleep.

On a related subject...

This is also that I don't get about the Squeedrones
They make a god almighty fuss about the people here, saying we're all mean and nasty and horrible lifeless, clueless, (insert fave insult here) individuals. Yet in reality, they should be thanking us. That may sound like a total ego wank, but it's not and here's why.
Anyone who has spent a fair amount of time dealing with "joe public" on a day to day basis knows for a fact that it NOT the fans of a product that get it changed or improved it is the most vocal disgruntled customers that do. Thats not ego driven "fuck arn't we the bomb" spin, it's a simple, undeniable fact. The drone's squee all the louder because now they can say "look, it's got better, see", but it has not, and never will be, them who pays the price for it or fights for the changes they are now enjoying.

I'm having flashbacks to Lindsay's "evil hand issues" in Angel.

I thought that the communications stones were bad enough, but in season 2 we have numerous plots centering around "visions" and "premonitions" and a bunch of stupid drama based in the assumption that the ship can now "mess with people's heads". How is it that this ship has a neural interface and can mess with people's heads, but Atlantis and all the other Ancient ships and installations we have seen could not?

The visions and ghosts are becoming an even worse deus ex machina than the stones were IMO. Hopefully the ending of the show uses that to show that there never was a Destiny, and everything starting the moment that Jack and Rush showed up at Eli's door was nothing more than a techno-dream. There never was a Scott or a Chloe or a 9th chevron. Nope.

Well, the way I see it, since we're on the subject of evil here, that the Ancients tried to build a nifty new ship that would be aware of itself. Unfortunately the ship was eeevilll and it all went tits up. The Ancients tried to dismantle it, but it wouldn't let them, so they came up with this desperate ploy to get rid of it and sent it out into the far reaches of space on a "mission to find, uh, umm, god! Yeah, go find god."
They knew that Destiny wouldn't come back until, oh, a few billion years. They'd be ready (or left the galaxy by then leaving a note saying "be right back")

And since that day, the Ancients never again attempted to build sentient ships, and they shruddered slightly every time someone mentioned Destiny.

I don't remember that one, maybe I should re-watch Angel. I was thinking about Lister and his mechanoid hand. :D

I thought the humour in SGU works quite well. The ironic thing is that its exactly the kind of humour we had in the old Stargates[...]

No. We laughed with the old Stargate shows. We laugh at SGU. They're two completely different types of humor.

What makes me laugh is that's almost a perfect analogy of SGU itself :)

That is so damn right! I've worked in many private sector/financial industry jobs & I have observed this first hand - the loudest, most narked off customers always get heard & get their wishes granted! (although by that same logic it should be WE who get heard & our wishes granted as we are the loudest, most narked-off & disgruntled customers of the SG franchise).............. that is why TPTB will fail - because they are simply shit businessmen.

oh but never EVER try to discuss that at GW, they will tell you that TPTB should NOT listen to you and the actors should not accept criticism from the lowly folks who watch their shows! :P yep in the real world the customer is always right-- they vote with their pocket book! ;)

I thought the humour in SGU works quite well. The ironic thing is that its exactly the kind of humour we had in the old Stargates, it might not be quite so prevalent but essentially its the same. Characters finding humour in the darkest of situations - honestly it wouldn't hurt to see more of this now they've been on the ship for nearly a year.

WE have NOT watched the same show at all!!!

No. We laughed with the old Stargate shows. We laugh at SGU. They're two completely different types of humor.
yep - sgu is completely ridiculous...not humorous at all! ;)

The fact that there's so little humor in SGU makes what few jokes they make all the more magnified. If you think about that fact for a minute you'll realize how sad that is. SG1 and SGA weren't exactly comedies but they had bits of humor in each episode regardless of how dire the circumstances were. With SGU it's nothing but doom and gloom, doom and gloom. When--finally--Eli cracks a joke about pie being ready or Greer about barbequeing a dinosaur it's such an anomaly that that moment really stands out. And that is not how it should be. The joke shouldn't be that noticeable that we comment on it. Bad writing all around.

And let's face it, for all we know Eli might not have been joking when it comes to pie. To someone of Eli's girth food is no joking matter. As for Young's "bat signal" joke, well, it came out more as frustration than laugh out loud funny.

Is this piece of shit canceled yet? And if not, why not? Seriously, WTF???
