Like every show, it will have it's fans. But the real story is watching it yourself. :) I watched it, once, and I concur with the author of that Hollywood Reporter article. Variety says similar. I think watching the ratings over the course of this season is going to show what is what. Numbers like 1.6m and 1.65m for a brand new, high production value show like this is a death sentence.

Wow, the Hollywood Reporter is holding no punches scalding this thing!

Some gems...

"Syfy's latest drama, Dominion, may be one of the dumbest, worst-acted, most poorly written series I've seen in ages. In no way should this encourage you to tune in hoping to rubberneck this bit of awfulness in hopes of creating some kind of new drinking game."

"It would be generous to say that Syfy's track record with dramas of late has been "spotty." This channel consistently settles for mediocrity and, in this instance, its far sadder cousin."

"Even with Syfy's helpful list of those involved, it's hard to tell who created and wrote this thing and why they should be singled out for scorn. Let's just say three or four people did a very bad thing and leave it at that. I'm reluctant to even list the actors because that can't help, can it? Better to just let Dominion slip off into oblivion and no one will be the wiser, right?"

I gave up on this half way through the 2 (maybe 3rd) ep when they showed the female ambassador from Helena in a cell stripped to her underwear with her handmaidens--pure sexual pandering

Thursday night IS sex night on syfy-attested to as SPARTACUS absolutely does not fit in anywhere --not "sy" and not "fy" but full of s-e-x

I forced myself to watch all of the first episode (painful), then I tried to watch episode 2, and I couldnt watch more than 10 minutes of it, maybe less. Even a full nude shot wouldnt make me watch. Isnt that what porn is for? At least in porn I dont get silly angels and Hunger Games nonsense. Why do I feel this thing is some sort of amalgam of Legion (bad movie), Hunger Games (meh), and Dune? I downloaded eps 3, 4 and 5 but I am very tempted to delete them without watching. But that does not mean we cant predict ratings!

Thursday night IS sex night at Syfy, that is true!

We know the show sucks but it is drawing an audience. I highly doubt it's going to get cancelled now. Same goes for defiance. Both disappointing news. I dislike this channel and these two shows very much and want it gone.

Dominion could continue, but I think the future for Defiance is dim. they are using that huge location set that Tripler lives close to, and they have a huge cast. I dunno, you are right about them not getting canceled soon (except Defiance). Defiance got a two year deal we know of. What about after this season?

Even if they are using the huge location, the show only has 13 episodes and it's still drawing well above 1.3m viewers.

True, but SGU, Atlantis, Terra Nova, and Primeval New World got canceled for higher numbers. Defiance is into it's second season down from the first, and the game has failed.

I'm too lazy to check so this is off the top of my head but from what I recall the producers sunk a ton of money into DEFECATION. I'm talking $100 million or more. (I recall it being more but don't know if that included the game production or not) My point being, 1.3 to 1.5 million viewers doesn't seem high enough to generate a good return on investment.

Obviously I'm not a staff accountant for the producers or investors so I don't know where they stand financially at this point. But from my reality-based vantage point I can't imagine how a show with such a large cast and such big production values can continue to tread water at 1.5 million viewers. I'm not seeing how they made back the original $100 million investment yet, let alone any profit in excess of that point. That just doesn't seem logical based on the numbers that we're seeing.

SGU got cancelled because the series had a series of bare patches. The ratings were fluctuating and not consistent like this. Not sure about primeval new-world but Terra nova got cancelled because It was costing something like 10 million dollars an episode. A Farcry from what is spent on defiance.

The first season of Dominion has a total of only 9 episodes. The second season of Defiance has a total of 13 episodes. Only 9 episodes in a season results in a relatively cheap season.

Yeah, and that's why I think both of these shows will most likely renewed despite the ratings. While it is still early to tell weather these two shows will get renewed, I think this is where the two shows will level out.

It's rather disingenuous of them to call 9 episodes a season. Yes, I know, everyone does it nowadays, but still, it's not a conventional season in the classic sense. This number is more in line with the new gimmick of giving questionable shows two "seasons" in order to make it look as if they were so popular they got renewed. We here at GateFans were the first to get wise to this nonsense and see right through this marketing BS.

As for being a "relatively cheap season", that all depends on the ratings vs. the return on investment in the long run. God only knows what it costs to produce this turd down in South Africa what with government incentives, etc. so maybe the producers are ahead of the game for the time being. But still, a 1.6 average isn't exactly The Walking Dead type of ratings bonanza and I don't see a production of this size being able to sustain itself for longer than a fake two-season run.

Classic in the U.S. sense, that is. UK television programs would consider a series (the word they use instead of season) any number of episodes from 3 to 13. Shows like Faulty Towers would have been considered a miniseries in the U.S.

Well, it is adverted as being "based on" LEGION.

I didn't think that movie was "great" but it was FAR more watchable and entertaining then this show

Im curious...what is it you like about it so far? I hate it, but I have only watched all of episode 1 and less than 10 minutes of episode 2. I found it nauseatingly insipid. Does it change, or is it just that you like the premise, or what?
