VW Screwed

A West Virginia engineer is the one who busted VW last year, and we are only just now finding out:

Daniel Carder, an unassuming 45-year-old engineer with gray hair and blue jeans, appears an unlikely type to take down one of the world's most powerful companies.

But he and his small research team at West Virginia University may have done exactly that, with a $50,000 study which produced early evidence that Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) was cheating on U.S. vehicle emissions tests, setting off a scandal that threatens the German automaker's leadership, reputation and finances.

Giving credit where credit is due. :) They are calling this David and Goliath. This scandal could cost VW billions of dollars, and the company itself may face criminal charges.

HAha . Me ! I was actually a big fan of Honda until they screwed me over also like hungdie . My honda was awesome . A simple civic , 118 hp and could do 138 mph . I would still have it but it had an electrical problem and fried itself . I really enjoyed racing Honda's . A civic , crx , civic si , acura integra . They all boogied very well . And then I drove a C4 corvette for a race team from the states and was hooked on chevy V8 power and supreme handling .
;) ;) ;)
I'm a huge fan of the F150 now ... They drive amazingly well . That may be my next vehicle . I am already used to high gas bills lol ... It cost $200 to fill an F150 ... Ouch huh but it will last you 700 + klm's

If I was a truck guy, I would have bought the Ford F150 25 years ago and would still be driving it today. I like the idea of having a car which is something you buy and own for a lifetime (or the lifetime of the car). For cars, that would be the old breadbox Volvo, and any car from Mercedes pre-Chrysler. For trucks, Ford wins. I routinely see F-150s from the 1970s running happily on the road. This goes for the SUVs based on the Ford trucks (Navigator, Expedition, Explorer, even the Bronco). They last forever. Seems to me that many people just want to be in a new car, OR they have been trapped into a lease which only offers an easy way out when you lease another vehicle from the same dealer. I would never lease the furniture in my home or my clothes, why a car?

Built to last many lifetimes! The original Jeep military spec of 1940 is still the majority of vehicles in military motor pools. They are so cheap to maintain and replace (from surplus) that they are frequently used for target practice.

I will never regret my purchase of the 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300e (W124). The design is now 30 years old, and they were made from 1987-1995 (Mercedes-Porsche 500e shown):

The car was the last of the "indestructable" Mercedes, and you see them on the road a lot (and not in repair shops). The ones post 1995 which were when Daimler purchased Chrysler (to learn the process of mass manufacturing), are notably less reliable and do not last as long. I see much newer Mercedes than mine which have paint peeling and ratty interiors.

Ford Expedition here- now and always - looks nice and very safe. :D never liked VW's - had one and it was a POS car! :P so buy a car for "good " gas mileage and discover it's faked...how long does it take a person to figure that out?

You would never figure it out. The gas mileage is real. What they don't tell you is that they have to turn off the emission control system to get it, which is at the heart of this case.

When you connect a VW to an emissions verification system, the software kicks in and activates the emission control system. When it's on the road and not connected, the software disables the emission control and you get your super mileage.

Unless you have super powers, you can neither see nor sense the increased emissions.

The fault lies in the Clinton/Bush/Obama regulatory state that insists that the air coming out has to be cleaner than air coming in.

Yes, that's why connecting a tube from your nose directly to the tail pipe is great for your health.

YAY Canada! Where they treat the middle-class like they're all millionaires!

In the US, that tank would probably be filled up for about $8. :icon_lol:

Not a Ford fan? :) From what I know about the numbers, the F-150 is considered the gold standard of pickup trucks not just here but worldwide. Even the Toyota Tundra (a Ford F-150 knockoff) sells more pickups than Chevy in Texas. I am totally not a pickup/truck/SUV kinda guy, but if I was I would be in a Ford :)

Hmmmm....not understanding Ford hate here. :) I consider Ford to be the best American auto manufacturer (although I have never owned an American car).

Ford and Holden are fought over constantly out here dude because of the V8 Supercars which used to be almost exclusively one or the other.

Oh, that one...the classic Mustang vs Camaro rivalry. :) Holdens are badged as Chevys here. I know that the powerful new Pontiac GTO that came out a while back was actually a Holden. Over here, Dodge is also included in that rivalry.
