Suddenly, the perspective of my original review of the premiere escapes me.
I was going to write a review on the premiere, and will still probably do so. But I was a bit put off by episode two on several fronts. I dont like the way they are inserting "the soul" thing into this series as though it represents all of Humanity. I think that the show risks becoming Christ-centric in its view of what the soul is supposed to be. For spiritual (non-religious) people, this is somewhat offensive. On the second front was the depiction of Valerie's parents at the funeral. They were BOTH black. Val was obviously mixed race (Lourdes Benedicto is half Filipina half Dominican). The parents shown at the funeral could not have had a child that looked like Val. Why didnt they just have her parents be a mixed couple? I viewed Ryan and Val as a mixed couple from the beginning, but obviously the showrunners did not. Interesting, but not enough of an issue to turn me off the show or any characters.
Then, there is the issue with Hobbes and Marcus...why wasnt the dangling thread resolved from last season where Hobbes gave Marcus Parker's research? What was the research? Where is Parker (Paul McGillion)? Im glad that Malik has been exposed as a V, but I dont like the way they are making Ryan seem untrustworthy. All and all, I am still in love with this show!
Diana...
Diana deserves her own paragraph. I love the way she was brought into the series, and the dynamic she has established with Anna taking power from her because of the emotions, and Lisa being a threat in the future. Diana adds balance to the leadership caste we have already seen. I felt that the Captains of the 29 ships seemed too GQ/Vogue for my taste, and Diana brings in some classic beauty IMO. I also dont like the cruelty that Anna is showing towards her mother. Do they have to show Anna slapping her to the ground or trying to force emmolation pills down her throat? Isnt Diana also a V? Doesnt she also have a tail?
Anyways, I will write the review before next Tuesday for the premiere, and perhaps somebody will write a review of episode 2.
