Stargate Heads Back To San Diego Comic-Con

For the first time in seven years the Stargate franchise is returning to San Diego Comic-Con, with a special panel event.
“Through the Gate: Celebrating the Stargate Franchise” will take place at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina on Thursday, July 20 at 6 p.m. In addition to celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Stargate SG-1, organizers promise “exclusive news, surprise guests, and giveaways.”
...
What sort of news may be forthcoming? Your guess is as good as ours right now, but also note two other panelists announced today: Sam Toles, who is Senior Vice President of Digital & New Platforms at MGM, and Kieran Dickson, Stargate Consultant & Editorial Director.

New TV series in the works? If I was the take a guess, possibly reboot news given that star trek has just been rebooted.

Did you see who is involved? Sam Toles, who is Senior Vice President of Digital & New Platforms at MGM, and Kieran Dickson, Stargate Consultant & Editorial Director. This is obviously the fact that MGM has an online platform to use stargate to launch a new platform online. It is looking like a new franchise. Why would a franchise that has not been at a comiccon for 7 years return? Stargate is also no longer on netflix anymore

Makes MUCH more sense than a new movies does. And it can have new characters and a reboot and will not suffer as much as Star Trek has.

I think that's why they decided to pull the plug on the movie. It could be that they go back to the very beginning of where stargate began with the ancients. Hopefully, we see some guest appearances on the show. I am surprised that this news has not gone viral. People have been dying to get stargate back on air and this might be just the case with this news. There is no new stargate game coming out either. Everyone on the reddit site is depressed when they should be seeing this that it might actually be great news!

Are these people really that stupid and serious? Stargate is HUGE for MGM otherwise they wouldn't have comissioned 17 seasons and 3 movies(Sorry, but SGU does not count). It is by far one of the most profitable and one of the most successful franchises out there.

The other could be a stargate remaster. Some are saying that it can't be a tv series because there is no news on it, but I beg to differ. Star trek series was not forthcoming and it was announced. The fact that they are announcing that all stargate fans be there, shows that they have something big to announce. News on this has been so tight-lipped. We did not even know that the movie idea was scrapped until a few months later. Tried as we may to get the news, we couldn't get any.

Could be, but there are no other indications happening. The Batman characters still do Comic Con and there is definitely no Batman series on the horizon. But there might just be a surprise! With Illiterati gone, there is nobody here who regularly attends Comic Con, so maybe somebody else will step up to the plate? :) About that Star Trek series, there were plenty of moves made before they announced Discovery. There was nothing sudden or unexpected about it.

Not from the internet I didn't see anything? I remember hoping for a new trek series, but I never saw news or rumours flying about that a series could make its way. Then in 2015, they were going to announce a new series without any prior news or rumours coming out. This could be just that, an announcement before a trailer/teaser. This is MGM we are talking about remember. Stargate news has been pretty dormant after the cancellation of the movies. The original creators of the series simply gave up on the movie. Plus, the failure of the new Independence Day movie didn't help Emmerich's prospects either.

Here is more proof. They've changed the entire stargate front page on MGM's site with stargate command as the symbol. Also it has this. It could be launch a new digital platform with HD versions of the show, or a brand new show.

On July 20th at San Diego Comic-Con there will be an announcement from Stargate Command. Sign up to receive an alert when we activate the Stargate.

Take my interpretation as a grain of salt, but I was examining why that particular A symbol is written like that. It looks like ancient writing which is looks like it might mean earth/origin in ancient language therefore it might be a restart - or a reboot from how stargate began? Remember, when dialling the gate, you always have to have the point of origin as the last address. I can't see them spending money redesigning the front page of all 3 franchises and condensing it into one page for a low budget video game or a comic book when they've already announced that there is going to be a comic book for SGU publicly. This looks like a TV show probably.

When you register, you get MGM studio's physical address, so this is no small announcement.

Looks like it might be a bluray release of SG-1. lol well that's a shocker. Atlantis DVDs are more expensive than the bluray.

but my theory is right though since one of the guys that joined MGM recently said this...so it might be a TV series for the Digital new platform.

At MGM, Toles will oversee efforts to leverage existing MGM intellectual property — and create new IP — for digital platforms, working with the studio’s theatrical, scripted, unscripted and distribution teams.

“Sam’s experience in digital media will accelerate our efforts in developing and creating compelling new content for today’s digital platforms, and will help to shape our company’s strategy as new platforms emerge,” Conroy in a statement.

Why isn't this generating any hype or interest? Good lord? Have Stargate fans become that depressed?
Because it's a comicon. My guess is that they are going to bring stargate on an online website on their website. I highly doubt there will be a new series anytime soon.

Any attempt to restart Stargate is going to encounter problems, and a lot of the problems trace back to the manner in which SG-1 and SGA were ended and of course the SGU disaster.

If they go full reboot they upset the portion of the fanbase that wants the SG-1 and/or SGA stories continued. Continuing SGU would just anger the same fanbase that drove it off the air in the first place. Or....they do what Pegg and Lin did with Star Trek Beyond and literally act like the offending installment (Star Trek Into Darkness) never existed.

But they did attempt to reboot the series with the movie. MGM allowed it. The only reason why the whole fell apart was because the original writers did not want to and because they did not get the freedom to do what they wanted. In other words, they would piss off a lot of the fans from the TV series. A part of me still wants a new tv series.

There is nothing happening around this announcement which would indicate any new TV series or movie, and for me that is the reason I am not excited about it. It might be a new game, or perhaps a Stargate themed venue somewhere, but no Stargate. Just my thoughts!

The only Stargate series which could be seamlessly continued is SGA. It was abruptly ended without an ending-like episode. SG1 basically ended in the movie Continuum. SGU basically ended with a hungry Eli standing on the Destiny and everyone in stasis. Also, to me SGA was the most expansive and interesting of the three Brad Wright Stargate series. I can't even viscerally see SGU as being a Stargate series.
