New BJS Interview

dissecting the words of the clueless....

The funniest parts in my opinion:

I wonder why! :P

Good that BJS recognized, that Scott isn't a Alpha male. He is stating the obvious. :D

he isn't even the Alpha female! or the beta male...maybe the Omega male :P:P

Here's my favorite line:

Let’s not talk down to these characters or the audience and create a pleasant, light Italian operetta. Let’s go for some Wagner, here.

:rotflmao:

Sure kid, let's go for some "Wagner". Gimme a break. SGU doesn't even rise to the level of Britney Spears artistically, let alone come close to Wagner. And hell, it would be a ratings success if it was a light Italian operetta because that would make the show interesting, you stupid twit!

And the SGA/SG-1 crew didn't have any "outside forces" fixing things for them, so I hope he's not trying to say that. They had to have their wits about them to solve their own problems, and they had to find help usually. Even when they point-blank asked the Ancients to help, the Ancients refused. Yes, both shows had their MacGuffins, but the Destiny IS a MacGuffin. And SGU just takes the "deus ex machina" effect to another level. All of this combined is just driving the frachise to new and previously unseen lows.
Thats one of the things I think SGA and SG-1 had a problem with sometimes, they did have a few outside forces fixing things for them. The thing is SGU has its share of "outside forces" fixing things for them. Most notably Chloe's alien disease that saved his life and hers.

I've never been fond of the whole "Deus ex machina" solution to things.

"Some" are fine...relying on it to solve a problem repeatedly is something else, entirely.

I'll catch heat for this, I know, but it's like Bella having the ONE ABILITY that will keep all of the Good Guys safe once she's turned.

ROFL!

Me, neither. But one of the things that our dear BJS doesn't know because he never watched SG-1 start to finish is that many of these neat little fixes come back to bite our heroes in the ass.

Even in the dim, distant episodes of S2 we had the Cimmerians nearly exterminated because SG-1 busted the Goau'ld detector in S1 to save Teal'c. The greatest "outside force" of all- the Asgard- led the Replicators directly to Earth. The magical cure for Jacob Carter's cancer also ended up being the cause of his death a few years later. I could go on, but anyone familiar with SG-1 knows that half the time they won, they lost. Just not in the same episode.

Exactly, they took one of the things not done well in SG-1 and Atlantis, claim they no longer do it, yet still do. Even the problems not solved by Deus Ex Machina are solved pretty lamely, like by Rush telling the ship to do it like in Trial and Error. Every ending to pretty much every episode has felt anti-climactic

I've never been fond of the whole "Deus ex machina" solution to things.

And that's one thing that was really great about SG1 (and to a lesser extent SGA), they made it a point to show that things couldn't be done deus ex machina all the time. This rejection of the deus ex machina device was a running theme that was pretty blatant and that's what made the stories interesting. Look at the ascended Ancients and the whole Oma/Daniel thing. The whole point about that story line was that the ascended "gods" weren't going to interfere and save the day. They expected humans to find their own way out of whatever mess they had gotten into. This "deus ex machina" quandry was made part of the story line and wasn't left as a cheap trick for the writers to use as a get out of jail free card. For instance, that episode where O'Neill is being tortured by Ba'al and ascended Daniel appears to him in his cell. Daniel doesn't save the day as much as he just is there to give Jack hope. And was it really deus ex machina for Daniel to give T'ealc (sp?) Jack's location during his meditation? That makes for some really good debate and is what good writing is all about.

And of course there was the Tokra (sp again?) who were far more advanced than humans but who were reluctant to share their deus ex machina type technology on a regular basis.

And then there was the Nox who could have helped the humans quite easily defeat the Goa'uld but didn't.

And let's not forget the Asgards who cherry picked the times they would help out -- mostly when it benefited them directly.

So, even though the deus ex machina trick could have been used more it was actually relegated to an ethical plot point to great effect. The fact that BJS obviously doesn't know this simply proves he's intellectually immature and should keep his mouth shut.

yepppers! those were great eps. Today syfy ran a sg1 marathon...caught one of my faves... "The other guys"...what can i say I have the hots for felger...I love his nebbish nerdiness! and giving coombs grief over loving Trek (fyi for those who don't know Coombs played Phlox on ENT), Coombs: "how can you call yourself a scientist if you don't worship at the altar of Roddenberry" GREAT LINE!!!!! Even that little goofy ep is 1000000x better than sgpoo!

Is it just me or does the decision of syfy to run a SG-1 marathon during the US "sweeps" time seem more than a little co-incidental??
To me it would seem that syfy is testing the waters to see if stargate is still a viable concept despite the damage being done to it by TPTB??

"The Other Guys" is not one of my personal faves, but I do enjoy a lot of it. I enjoy it when shows turn to different view points and I think this perfectly illustrates one of the great saving graces of SG-1: The ability to laugh at itself and enjoy the ride. They poke fun at the Trek similarities, SG-1s superhero status and the fact that the little guy can sometimes save the day. It's not profound but it's entertaining.

SGU might be a better show if it had one of the characters who was a hardcore BSG fan and kept a meta comentary, rather than just "borrowing" things like FTL without even an explanation.

I hope SGU doesn't get canceled before their "Glee" episode airs, you know, the one where someone breaks into song in every single scene, replete with dancing of course. Oh, shades of "West Side Story" in space, I can see it now, Chloe and Scott are two star crossed lovers who can never be together because of their differences: she being a fish and him being a developmentally disabled human. He's a "Jet" and she's a "Shark" and never the twain shall meet! The knife fight alone would make it worth watching.

Hmmm...what does that remind me of? Ah yes, the Incredible Mr Limpett! Except this time, its Ms Limpett (Chloe) and Scott. I know its a LOT before your time, but somebody might remember that movie. :)
