Guardians of the Galaxy is a Marvel franchise Science Fiction / Fantasy/Superhero film. Note that description because it does mix elements of all three genres together into what seems pretty clearly to be intended as a new movie franchise for them.
For the uninitiated, Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics was about a group of miscreants who come together and form a team that saves the galaxy on more than one occasion. It has in its history been known as being one of the more humorous comics in the superhero arena and also was noted for plots that were just plain zany. I can safely say that the film does both of these well.
So, what does Guardians do right? To me I would list the following:
The tone. Tone is as posted in other reviews how a movie feels. Guardians gets its tone exactly right and in its case that was tricky to do. What it does is it plays its parts with the villains very seriously and its parts with our “heroes” have a healthy dollop of humor. That it succeeds in mixing the two tones without making the whole film feel silly is a tribute to good directing.
The lead characters. All five leads feel like real individuals and have depth. Chris Pratt’s portrayal of Peter Quill (Star Lord) is that of a jerk who over the course of the film develops into a less self centered person – sort of like a fusion of Han Solo and Marty McFly. Zoe Saldana is Gamora – assassin and daughter of Thanos and she plays the role well, with a literal mindedness that creates sparks between her and Pratt. Vin Diesel is Groot, an intelligent plant being of very few understandable words but nonetheless very emotive. And then there is pro wrestler Dave Bautista playing the revenge seeking Drax the Destroyer – and it was a shock to discover he can act! He does the role great.
The fifth member of the Guardians is Rocket, a genetically engineered raccoon played via advanced motion capture technology by Bradley Cooper. Rocket is a GREAT character and in his own way a show stealer. He was very fun to watch and you can identify with him a lot.
On the villain side, the main characters are Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser and Karen Gillan’s Nebula – another daughter of Thanos. Pace and Gillan both play their characters completely straight and it is a wise decision, as it offsets the more humorous interactions of the Guardians well.
The CGI. Yes, we finally have a film where the CGI is not cartoony and does not feel fake. Also it helps that CGI is not overused but rather physical sets were used when possible. For example, the Kyln prison is a physical set and it makes the scenes shot in it work better as the character to environment interactions are smooth and natural.
Is Guardians perfect? No. As is common with most Marvel films of late the story uses a Macguffin (in this case an infinity stone) to launch the story, although to its credit even the Guardians basically acknowledge it is a macguffin. Also to me Michael Rooker (Yandu) could have used more screen time. But these are quibbles.
Basically, the movie is fun. It has excellent characters who have a camaraderie they build between themselves that is fun to see develop and a droll sense of humor that had the theatre I was in erupt in laughter more than once. I like it!
