did illegal download really affect the ratings?

I kept seeing Joesph M and Darren from GW(as well as others on the forum) pick illegal downloads as one of the causes for the drop in ratings for SGU. I find this the biggest load of shit I've ever heard. From what I read most people will have DVRs in the US, but those who do exchange in such illegal activities are living outside the US,who have NOTHING, Zero, bubcus, influence on the Neilsen Ratings. So,why the fuck, are these morons picking on illegal downloaders as one of the causes for SGU's ratings declining? Haven't these morons heard that OTHER shows get downloaded too? And I am sure they get downloaded at a higher rate than SGU/SG-1 and SGA combined and they still manage to cough out 5 million viewers.
I for one watch stuff on cable and do live outside the US and have just recently got rid of the sci-fi channel here but during the time I was watching stuff on sci-fi it didn't matter whether I watched it or not because it didn't contribute to the ratings.

God the ignorance.

No, it's an example of people grasping at straws to "explain" why their highly hyped (but in fact, grossly inferior) product isn't getting the viewers I'm sure they promised TPTB.

Personally, I think, like any really good spindoctor could tell you, the best spin comes from when there is a core element of truth behind what you are saying. I do believe that "niche" or "rabid fan attracting" shows will be subject to more downloads and "alternate viewing methods" than mainstream (non "reality") television due to the nature of "fans", so yes I think it did hurt SGU in a way. Did it rise to the level of what it is being spun to? Nope.

As BW simply refuses to consider the quality of the show as a factor for viewership (at least not publicly), he may come up with any kind of excuse.

If you ask me, a creator that has lost the ability to even consider the fact that his work is not well accepted by the audience, is done for.

Unless he snaps out of that, his career is all downhill from here.

SGPoo fans are criminals!

Don't these people realize what they are saying about the sgpoo fans? They are saying the fans of their precious show are social deviants, illegal downloaders, basically criminals!??!?!?! You know people get arrested and charged for such activities. Who would say something so negative about their audience? Oh yeah these lame-brains. "Watch sgpoo the preferred choice of child molesters, theives, and the rest of the good old boys on cell block F" yep go ahead guys, talk about how your fans are more likely to engage in criminal behavior!

If SGA can get the ratings and was still in Top 10 in illegal downloads every week, month and year, while SGU couldn't get the ratings and still wasn't in Top 10 in illegal downloads every month or year. Then in short, no, illegal downloads did not affect the ratings.

Besides most of the illegal downloaders live outside of the U.S, where they couldn't have contributed to the Nielsons anyway.

I'm guessing PTB of all networks have taken illegal downloading into account by country and or region, and setting license and rebroadcast fees by popularity. MGM has all the raw data for domestic and abroad, SGU was canceled because it was not profitable in any market.

It's a very common defense

Used by many producers and directors these days to excuse poor preforming Movies or TV shows.

Even Uwe Boll has used this to dismiss his constant flops.

Not even on the list in 2010 or 2009!

SGA, on the other hand, was #6 in 2008:

Now where's that "younger, tech-savvy audience" Mozzy keeps referring to again?

It's complete rubbish. No evidence for it at all, the figures disprove it, and the notion that SGU is unfairly disadvantaged compared to other shows because SGU fans are more "tech savvy" than viewers of other shows is such a desperate clutch at straws it's hilarious. Brad Wright got it right early on, when he said, "If we make a good show, you will watch it. If we don't, you won't." They didn't, so we didn't. That, purely and simply, is why it failed.

Well, Joseph "Loretta" Mallozzi, we only did as you suggested.

We felt it was a bad show, so we didn't watch.

And now you're mad at us because we were paying attention?

So what is the conclusion? We know SGU download figures, we know the ratings for live, +SD and +7 and we have a general idea about DVD sales.

It states that SGU was so bad that it wasn't worth watching it live, wasn't worth DVRing, wasn't worth downloading illegally, wasn't worth getting the DVDs either.

Truth hurts.
