The Belle of the Ball
Well this is sad news. I've got a lot going on right now and didn't see this until just now but I felt the need to make a comment.

I'm sure some of you will be happy to see Brad go but personally it's the worst news out of all of this. I enjoyed the original Stargate movie but I was never a fan until SG1 came along - the characters and ideas created there made it a franchise I cared about. The concept itself never interested me much as it's always the vision of the producers and actors that draws me in.
For me this means that someone else taking over Stargate in years to come, or a re-imagining, doesn't equate to Stargate coming back for me. There's a chance I'll enjoy it as something separate but I'm a fan of the O'Neill, Mckay, Rush canon not a new story. And honestly it's not likely they'll find a team as dedicated as the one they had - a lot of them have been there since (or near) the beginning.

Still Brad Wright and the team have my respect for crafting 17 seasons of great television and an entire universe that I was a fan of. Hopefully whoever is in charge of MGM when they bring it back has a great deal of respect for what they created.

rush and canon do NOT belong in the same sentence. IMHO sgpoo will always be AU. ;) I am glad BW is leaving- in the end his ego destroyed the stargate I loved!

For me SGU ending and the hiatus is what has destroyed the Stargate I loved. Either way it's happened now and we're all in a similar boat in that Stargate isn't on TV for us anymore.

"The hiatus"? What happened? What are you talking about?

They did a good job of rebooting ST , so when and if they bring back SG with a new team, I'm hopeful for it.

New Stargate might be good. All I'm saying is that the hiatus is a roll of the dice, we are all hoping it lands on six but there's five other sides.

And personally speaking Star Trek worked because the story ended - a reboot was a good way of telling new stories. For Stargate I still wanted to see the characters of all 3 shows again, (particularly that RDA centered movie). That's just where I'm at anyway. Reading the news made me feel like doing some mild venting.

How did ST end?? They totally could have made another ST TNG movie if they wanted to. The actor that played Data said , he did not want to do it anymore (as Data) because androids should not age, and he being human was aging. But there was no end to the storyline. They could always make another. IMHO ST 09 was good , because they put together a talented new group of actors, writers and producers. They took their time and made the movie that they wanted to make. Stargate could do the same thing. I think most don't have a problem with the actors or storylines as much as we do with the writers directors and producers.

I was at Brad Wright's panel on Sunday and can post snippets of what was said, if anyone is interested. I really wish I'd come armed with a list of quotes of his, because he got quite defensive when one questioner dared to accuse him of "general negativity" towards fans, and especially Atlantis fans. (She was restraining herself, so she didn't explode with hate, all over him.) He was (quote) "Quite offended by that." Oh, and it was all in her head.

Over the course of 45 minutes, he did manage to blame: MGM, SyFy, Robert Cooper, the slow DVD market, advertisers and the Nielsons, and tech savvy viewers who refused to watch live. And it certainly wasn't his idea to put Atlantis down in San Francisco Bay. If he had his way, it would be parked behind the moon.

Would love to hear all about it. Have to say I'm not surprised by the crazy things he said that you just mentioned. It sounds like he's still in serious denial. Please give us all the gory details!

The 'Official' Announcement

Here is BW's announcement about the SGU movie, which is how he started his panel:

So, I’m going to start this off with what is probably not sad news for some of you. We found out that, uh, pretty much it’s, the SGU movie is not going to happen. (Awww, from audience. Silent glee from some of us.) It just took too long. Financing couldn’t come together in time and a week ago we had (garbled) and actually it’s quite sad for me. I’m going to be cleaning out my desk on Monday morning. (Ooooh, from audience.) Yeah. It’s okay. When you’ve had a desk in one place for 17 years, it’s actually daunting, cause I don’t know what’s in some of those drawers. Maybe it will be something worth selling. (Like your SOUL, Brad?)

That, right there, is why a good part of fandom can't stand the guy anymore. Who starts a statement like that on the offensive and already getting a dig in at fans who dont like sgu?

and please, please, please any info from that panel would be awesome. the vid clips seem to be very slow in coming out from the con. I havent found any on line apart for some supernatural panel ones. very strange :(

Thats interesting i thought they were buddies. Maybe sgu caused more splits than just fandom :(

You mean to tell me NOBODY clapped when he said there would be no SGU movie? Not one? I find that hard to believe...not even a snicker or two? If I had been there, I would have created a YouTube moment to be sure. :) Guffaws and nonstop laughter until carried away by security. That would be worth about a million views on YouTube, dontcha think?

Seriously, though...sounds like he went in there with shields up and EXPECTED to be attacked. He is feeling guilt, a bit of shame, and a whole lot of frustration and bitterness towards fans who openly dissed his show. He doesnt know WHICH fans when he is at a Con, so he looks askance at ALL of them. He may never get over this period in his life, and when Stargate is revived down the line he will feel COMPELLED to participate and he may not be allowed to. If it werent for his arrogant remarks and flippant behavior for the past year or so, I might feel sorry for him. But, oh well...

He is sneaky with the blaming. Saying things like, "The idea for SGU was all Robert's. He had to talk me into it." And, "Robert insisted the lighting had to be dark..."

I am going to post my reply in flaming hell because it's a rant :p

Maybe if I post a little bit at a time, I'll gain enough posts to access flaming hell again.

*cough* Creation has a strict policy against video or audio recording *cough* That would be wrong.

Well, I was in the front row, wearing my Atlantis shirt, and did a lot of eyerolling and pretty much refused to look at him the whole time. It was sad how many people cheered for him. I was expecting more of a negative reaction than he got. And when one negative question did come up, he practically yelled at her, "I think I know who you are!" Like she's the only one. Sheesh!
