And that is precisely what needs to be done to fix it. A new showrunner who is a fan of the originals could maybe fix it?Don't blame them. Unless it is accompanied by a new showrunner who undoes the entire Gatwa and Whittaker eras this is a fatally damaged IP.
Who has survived for literally decades, and while I do not like the Jodie or Gatwa "versions of the doctor" The DOCTOR as a storytelling vehicle is still a masterpeice of Sci-fi writing, but for the most part they use older males to facillitate that. Age, wisdom, all the 1960's associations with logic and reason to do it. Let's not forget Gallifrey was destroyed in the wars when John Hurt blew it up to destroy the Daleks by using the moment, so you cannot blame it all on Jodie or Gatwa. What I CAN (and will) blame on them is the DRASTIC shift in "the Doctor's personality", and THAT shows a distinct lack of skill and ability (as well as the misfired stories) Though I did enjoy some of Jodies stories later on in the run, the damage had been done and Gatwa's were just 99% CRAP They totally stripped the "male protector" role of the Doctor. Even in the God-awful movie, the Doctor was still a protector. Even some of Peter's style was Not Dr Who (Medieval tank driver?? WTF!!)And that is precisely what needs to be done to fix it. A new showrunner who is a fan of the originals could maybe fix it?
It's great to see you here again man! About this show, I never really pinned it on Jodie or Gatwa. I pin the disasters of late on the writers and showrunners who cast Jodie and Gatwa to fulfill THEIR vision of a new sort of Doctor show. It's easy to point at actors and blame them for the stories their writers have given them to act out, and the characters that they were given to play. It was never about the actors in my opinion. The story and very foundation of Doctor Who has been fundamentally distorted by the 13th Doctor and beyond (Tennant and Gatwa). Doctor Who has been damaged to almost the same degree as Star Trek. All on the foundational level. Once that has been done, in order to revive the show and the lore is to repair previous damage. or erase it by pushing it into an alternate existence or retconning it. Both The Doctor and Star Trek are going to have to do this.Who has survived for literally decades, and while I do not like the Jodie or Gatwa "versions of the doctor" The DOCTOR as a storytelling vehicle is still a masterpeice of Sci-fi writing, but for the most part they use older males to facillitate that. I will make no judgement on Jodie or Gatwa's acting, I have not seen them in enough to make that call, But I have been reading since I was 4, and I turn 50 next week, and I can SURE as HELL sniff out a shit story. It is the SAME complaint WE have been posting about here since the inception of this site (even under the original name). WE ALL may have different distinctions on what makes something "shit", but like any art form, you know shit when YOU see it.
I agree, Dr Who needs new (or old) writing at the helm, and perhaps it should "rest" again like it did, BUT as a method for telling stories? Afraid I don't see it guys and gals. I see it the same as Trek (different elements) but PURELY as a vehicle? I think it is fine.
This could work. But it has to be something very clear that revises the earlier events or erases them altogether. The fix would be to either use CGI or get Capaldi back for a scene or two and change his regeneration. Instead of Whittaker give us someone like Michael Sheen. Then go from there using science fiction writers- no activists allowed. The moment you disappear Whittaker you undo all the crap.
You got your wishDoctor Who needs a hiatus and not to come back until it can be under a showrunner with the guts to retcon all the garbage out and fix the huge problems.
Today we’re announcing an update on plans for the future of Doctor Who.
As part of securing the next phase of the show for future generations, and in line with the BBC’s Charter and Agreement requirements, the BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year. Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC and this tender underpins the BBC’s continued commitment to Doctor Who ensuring audiences will enjoy the show for years to come.
After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode. This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory.
The previously announced new Doctor Who animation series for CBeebies is currently in production.
Details of the tender will be announced in due course.
The BBC retains all IP in Doctor Who. BBC Studios will continue to lead the global distribution of Doctor Who as well as licensing, consumer products, digital and immersive experiences on behalf of the BBC
