How the f*ck did this get through unnoticed?

I don't know about anyone else but if I buy a phone it's MY phone. I'm not borrowing it or licensing it. I'm outright paying for it and own it. If I want to switch from AT&T to T-Mobile, that's my choice.

THIS is why I root my cellphones. I have always had full access to my phones because I do not like the idea of updates being sent to my phones or computers to DIS-able things. Rooting it is not the same as unlocking it, since it does not change the carrier access. But you can disable "phone home" software installed by the carriers and you can even remove the updater itself. :). But if you root your phone. Sprint will disown you in customer service. With your phone rooted, you can use the wireless hotspot for free instead of having to pay $29.00 extra each month. Carriers sometimes use software based throttling on your phone. Sprint does not, but others do. Now, they are once again telling you you cant do something the phone can do, even when you own it?

There's a petition going round for you guys. Hope this restriction to unlocking phones doesn't spread into the UK.

I doubt any of this nonsense would spread anywhere else. The obsessive protectionism of big corporate interests that don't need protection is an American thing. The rest of the world seems to be in the 21st century when it comes to commerce, even in 3rd world countries.
