I have not seen this yet, but the critics are all over the place with this movie.

Roger Ebert gave it three stars:

http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/thor-the-dark-world-2013

There are just as many scenes where inherently exciting characters, like Thor, kill time connecting plot points. Watching Thor make quick work of an inconsequential enemy in an opening scene should be fun. But the scene has no flair to it, and feels like a perfunctory introduction to the character. The first scene in the film where Hemsworth gets to be really charming comes later, when he's squabbling with Hiddleston about operating a commandeered dark-elven space-ship. The squabbling itself isn't that funny, but the scene's pay-off is. Hemsworth's eyes light up as he gets the ship to fly, instantly reminding you why you came in the first place.

Still, more often than not, "Thor: The Dark World" is more busy than exciting. There are a couple sub-plots too many, like the one with frequently-naked super-scientist Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard). And too many characters that are introduced with a promising scene, like Rainbow Bridge guardian Heimdall (Idris Elba), are forgotten during the film's climactic battle. The film's world also generally looks slapped together, especially the dark elves, who look like a cross between "Land of the Lost"'s Sleestaks and "Doctor Who"'s Cybermen. Visually, "Thor: The Dark World" is a step back after "Thor," which at least looked unique enough.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it five stars so far (sample of reviews shown):

Anybody rush out to see this yet? I think Ill see it "at home" :icon_cool: I see that the silly 3D is being pushed again. I really wish that Hollywood would get it that people arent going to just shell out double money to see this in 3D, or any movie in 3D. Some will, but most wont.

Natalie Portman trying (vainly) to be comedic and sexy but coming off as shrill and ball busting. Yet one more reason to remain gay. :winking0052:

How did a dead man give it three stars?

Is Roger Ebert proof against death?

You're reading reviews of the first movie, my friend.

(I really enjoyed it, btw)

I wondered that same thing! :icon_rotflmao:

This is one movie I will go to the movies for to see as soon as I get a babysitter.

I don't really care what critics say, as it was panned from the start, but I am NOT looking for a masterpiece of theatre, I am looking for a continuation of the story of Thor and Loki as set out in both the first movie and the Avengers. Not every movie or show will be "wank-worthy". In fact most very much are not, but if they can tell their story and make it entertaining, then I will watch it. This one gets a "movie pass" based on the fact I happen to personally like the subject matter, but I would not expect anyone else to accept that as a reason, or a endorsement either.

Sigh, we will get there :)

Alas it will still be weighed down by Natalie Portman stinking up the screen (her performance in the first Thor film was horrible but thankfully the rest of the movie was pretty decent).

Hey, you should be used to shitty people bringing down the story

Her CHARACTER is a whiney bitch, so perhaps she was well chosen :D

If they picked someone like Sarah Michelle Gheller, I would be upset, but the charater itself is a whine. :D

Natalie's a whiny little diva, from what I can see...

And OM1, you DID sit and watch until the very END of the credits, right?

Yes, and ya know what Lit? Im actually going to pay to see this on the big screen. I really liked it a lot! I actually liked it better than the first, but still not as much as I liked Avengers. I did roll my eyes a few times when S.H.I.E.L.D was mentioned, because the stuff going on with Asgard, Thor, Loki and the Realms and the Dark Elves made the very best most secret stuff available to Earth seem utterly laughable. :) Im certain that the TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D will mention things from this movie in an episode or two. They did that for Star Trek a lot...cross referencing the movies and the show. They already keep bringing up the battle in New York in the TV show. Natalie Portman's character comes off as a whiney bitch, yes she does and loudly. I mean, did she really get to slap Thor AND Loki and not get turned into dust? I wont spoil it, but I think I need to see this on the big screen unless I can find an HD copy somewhere. The versions available are pathetic, but watchable.

The core problem is she's not a good actress. So they needed to recast the role.

I still think Elsa Pataky would have been good as Jane.

She did okay in the Star Wars prequels IMO. In these Thor movies she comes off as somebody's high school girlfriend who throws a hissy when her boyfriend does not call her every day.. The tongue lashing she gave Thor when she saw him again, along with the slap made me say "AW COME ON!" outloud. Still, this is a very worthy second movie. :) Im gonna watch it again, stoned this time. :icon10:

I think that she got her panties in a twist about having to play the role in the first one, but she is contractually obligated to do the role at this point.

She needs to pull her thumb out of her ass on this one, though. It's not as though her career is going swimmingly. Her current film has been a disaster, with the original director leaving, then losing at least two leading men who decided they no longer wanted to work on the thing. It's like the damned thing is cursed or something.

I liked the ending of this film, as I think that someone was a lot kinder than someone else would have been.

I know I'm being obscure here, but I don't want the whole "you spoiling bitch!" thing.

And I loved the surprise appearance. We laughed our asses off seeing someone who is normally about as exciting as a bowl of cornflakes chewing the scenery.

Summer Glau must have lent her something of hers...LOL!

Sorry, but Portman stunk in the Star Wars Prequels also, but given the bad writing in those films it's hard to picture any actress really being able to make it work.

Summer Glau may have a track record of every show she works in being cancelled (which means Arrow on the CW should be nervous as they added her recently). However she also has a rep for being the anti-diva. In fact, she also would have been a better Jane.

I agree. :) I think she has just been unlucky. Actually, I think somebody more like Anne Hathaway would have been better as Jane. I dont see why a guy like Thor would find Natalie Portman's Jane his type. She lacks a certain grace and presence as an actress and in her characters. She couldnt summon it in Star Wars, and she doesn't have it in Thor DW.
