SyFy Forums going dark on January 1st

I learned about this forum through shavedape's posts over on siffy. I had posted there for over fifteen years, nearly as long as I've had a computer. I'm also a regular at fireflyfans.net and serenitymovie.org, plus there are other boards I visited that no longer exist, and a few I've bookmarked but never participated on. I do have a board attached to my site, originally on ezboard, now on yuku, mainly to mention the reviews I post, but also for general discussion. It gets almost no traffic.

So, we'll see how it goes here. It will take a while to figure out how to find everything that would interest me. Don't expect me to be a prolific poster, but hopefully what ever I do say won't be a waste of time for you to read.

Lets give her a job. :)
Chief Cook & bottle washer? Just don't make her a moderator. From her history at SciFi, she moderates from her own personal opinions and views at least as much as she does based upon rules of the board.
I don't have a personal grudge against her; but I don't think a moderator should allow her personal beliefs to guide their actions as a moderator.

WELCOME!!!

:welcomewagon:

The first thing you have to get used to is the FREEDOM. :) There is lots of stuff you can do in the forums, like ratings and posting Wikipedia and all the other video sites (not just YouTube). There are HowTos, and you can pick two trinkets from the Awards and Trinkets as a newbie. The Awards are given for predictions, contests, contributions, etc. Have fun and tell the others there is a place to go.

Good to see you!
The most important "freedom" is the freedom to express one's views without concern over censorship. The rest of it is lights, bells and whistles, which to this point, I haven't paid much attention to on any board. I guess this is a holdover from my earliest chat experiences on the 'net. IRC, or Internet Relay Chat is a real-time text only communication protocol popular in the early days of the Internet. All you had to work with was your written word and a few basic ASCII emoticons, so I became comfortable with that.

Having operated a few IRC channels back in the day, I understand and agree with the need for some moderation, personal attacks and insults for example should not be tolerated. However, some of Sci Fi's board moderators had this nasty habit of censoring based on disagreement with the content of a post, such as criticism of SciFi shows or different political views. And politics can't really be kept entirely out of boards; politics is the process by which a society makes its decisions, and in particular discussions about science fiction stories since those stories often ask us to examine our own political beliefs; Continuum is a very good example of this; one of the better plots of the show is Kiera's slow awakening that most of what she has believed all her life is wrong. If someone goes over the line of civility by using personal insults and such, that content should be deleted upon detection, but as long as someone keeps a civil tongue in their head, their views should not be grounds for censorship. This was a big problem on SciFi's boards, but it may have been at the direction of NBC/Universal or whatever other corporate entity paid for the party, since most of the mods demonstrated this behavior, some more than others.

Hopefully, this board offers that kind of Freedom.

This board's openness will be somewhat of a culture shock for you. :icon_lol:

BINGO. Mockingbirdgirl is just too fkking self-centered. She is still moderating the boards even though they are closing! I find that hilarious.

This is actually one of the main reasons this site got started a few years back. We left a site en masse due to the horrible moderation problems there. Thankfully OM1 created a place where censorship of ideas and opinions isn't allowed. And the mods (myself included) don't go on power trips by handing out warnings or banning people on a whim. (In fact I think we've only ever banned one member and that only happened after years of putting up with his anger and mental issues: unprovoked attacks against members, filling his public profile with a certain four-letter word, etc.)

So trust me, it takes a lot to raise the ire of the mods in here. Case in point: I recently had a member refer to me as a "fcking moron" in an open forum but it didn't even occur to me to take action against him/her. That's just not how we do it here. We allow for open debate and it's a fact that we all enjoy a good row so it's expected that things will get heated. At the end of the day though we all generally get along.

We did decide fairly early on to create an area that isn't visible to the public for more "intense", crude and profane discussions though. It's called FLAME HELL and new members can access it once they reach a certain threshold of posts. (I think it's 50). You can take the gloves off and pretty much swing away on anything you want in there.

I do not want politicians deciding who will be the next Bond. Suppose Labour wins the next election big and wants an Pakistani to be the next Bond?

Screw Bond. I'm more worried that Congress will pass a law banning the chaining of Chris Pine (replete with ball gag) to an old iron bed frame in one's basement. I mean, if his eyes are saying "Yes!" doesn't that technically mean he's given his legal consent? :daniel_new004:
