Star Trek DS9: General Discussion Thread

I'm re-watching DS9.

When DS9 first aired, I sinfully dismissed it after watching just a few random episodes. I thought it was lacking in action and simply wasn't the star trek for me.

Now that I've seen Firefly, Andromeda, Farscape (meh), SG-1, SG-A, Babylon 5, Other ST, several times and watched every single sci-fi movie I can get my hands on ....

I came back to DS9 and started watching it from the start.

It's pretty damn good. Not only do characters like O'Brien and Warf get developped, but races like the Cardassians and the Ferengi get developped as well. We get insight into alien cultures, technologies, laughter, action... and the episodes still retain the Rodenberry formula, i.e. provides some sort of closure at the end of the episode.

DS9 is teaching more about Star Trek than any other Trek series ever has.
DS9 truly is great SCI-FI.

.... I'm sure Michael J. Straczynski would disagree, since B5 just kicks everybody's ass, but DS9 is nothing to sneeze at.

I will re-watch all of sci-fi over-and-over again, but I will NOT watch Stargate Universe. SGU is not Sci-Fi.

I can't say i loved DS9. But it was definitely a mark above and highly above average.

What i didn't like was that all the alien races suddenly felt much more human. They didn't have 'alien' quirks which truly set them apart from teh humans. I think teh Founders and Jem'Hadar came close, but several episodes turned them into more fragile 'human' beings.

Not to say that tehre were never differences. I loved that episode where Ezri brings up that old serial killer host to catch the crazy Vulcan assassin. That was awesome.

But on a whole, DS9 just felt too preacy and WW2 to me. I still watch it and rank it as great sci-fi, but it's nothing that makes me want to watch it over and over again.

I'll admit the first episode where Sisko gets into a verbal fight with Picard REALLY turned me off. I did not like that they bashed Picard to uplift Sisko.

Then again that can be explained by Sisko's meeting with Q. He punches Q and Q just kinda laughs at him because Sisko isn't nearly as cerebral as Picard.

Yes i'm a Picard Fanboy :D Anyone who can match wits with Q and even win definitely deserves my adoration :p

I agree! I also liked the episodes with Sisko in the 20th & 21st century as well as the story line with Nog & his father not being stereotypical Ferengis. DS9 had a lot of teachable moments, kind of reminiscent of what TOS did.

DS9 could have been so much more than it was, it could have done some amazing things but remained on too small a scale to be remembered as truly great Star Trek IMHO.

I loved DS9...it is my second fave of all the treks (TOS being number one...what??? I watched it as a kid and those were great graphics for the times :P) I am a political junkie by nature, so the whole Bajoran storyline was fascinating to me. I loved watching Kira struggle as the Bajoran dream of independence evolved into nasty political wrangling (who didn't love to hate Kai Winn?;) ) and deal with the idea that her "boss" was the Emissary.
Avery Brooks as Benjamin Sisko!!! wow!! I admit to being an Avery Brooks fangirl since I first saw him as hawk on spenser for hire. :D (and the short lived series Hawk) He was among the best actors in the entire franchise.
Sorry aragon---I can't stand Picard so loved it when Sisko pwnd him. ;)(never figured out the point of Picard...a bureaucrat running a starship??? never worked for me!) And the puch to Q!!!! Brilliant!!! Q never meddled at DS9 again. :P But my favorite side of Sisko was the relationship between him and his son, Jake. I saw a good caring Dad who made time for his child despite a consuming job. :D very well written. I also found his growing comfort (over the life of the series) with his role as the Emissary fascinating.
DS9 did character drama RIGHT...the sgpoo people should have watched DS9 to see how to make fascinating storylines with room for character development without sinking into a cesspool of soap opera cliches. So grab some popcorn and see what sgpoo could have been.

Although officially I preferred DS9 to Voyager I had more VOY VHS cassettes back in the day. Although VOY had alot of filler episodes, DS9 I would say had more.

I like DS9.
Come to think of it, I can only remember having watched the whole thing once.
Perhaps I should put it on my list to watch again sometime soon.

I absolutely hated Kaii Win.
She's worse than the Mrs. Bouquet (Bucket) character in "Keeping up appearances" (if that rings any bell).
Dax was adorable. I could fall in love with a woman like that if only Sisko would stop referring to her as "old man". :)

Odo is great.
Too bad he played a hitler-like character in that SG-1 episode "The other side" (season 4 if I'm not mistaken).

Well maybe I exaggerated a bit with the comparison to hitler, but he plays a racist character that wants to exterminate the 'breeders' on the planet surface.

That episode was great!

I really liked the plot twist of that episode! Its been done before, but this one was great because of the Hitler-esque overtones. Teal'c was "not like us", if I recall. But when the underground fortress was under attack after the shield failed, Teal'c turned and smirked at the dude as if to say "yeah, MF, get out of this one!". Great episode.

I've just started rewatching DS9.
I must say so far it is not quite as catching as I remembered it.
But I'm not even halfway through the first season so hopefully I will start to enjoy it more.
Video quality is rather appaling for a DVD.
Some special effects are really bad.

Dude, that's season 1 and 2. It'll really pick up starting season 3, and then some more when season 4 begins!

Right, but what else are you going to watch on TV sci-fi wise these days???

Well I don't really watch any tv since I don't have one installed at the moment and I got really bored with whatever was on local tv years ago.
So I watch DVD's or download series.
But I guess there's SG-1, SG-A, Voyager, TNG, Enterprise, TOS, Sanctuary, Threshold (I really liked that one and hated it got cancelled after 1 season), Firefly (likewise).
Then ofcourse there's Babylon 5, Dr. Who and V which I've never seen an Earth Final Conflict which I still have to watch properly some time.
But for now it's DS9 :D

Near the end of Season 7

Reaching the end of season 7 (again) , and looking back at 7 years of DS9.

Despite the large cast, I can look back fondly at every single character and see how they've evolved.

Seeing Nog grow up, join star fleet, get injured in a 'great battle' , recover ..

The rise and fall of "Kye Win" SP? and the thirst for power. The mis-guided, finds herself, and gets lost again.

The family life of General Martok.

NOW THIS IS STORY TELLING. Perhaps not as great as Babylon 5, but fantastic stories, adventure, action and FUN.

Star Trek at it's finest, sci-fi at nearly it's best.

SGU. What can I say? What happened? It ain't sci-fi, it's barely teenie bs drama.
Nobody will watch SGU for drama, and there's no sci-fi , no stories, nothing.

SGU is an empty, expensive shell of a TV show and reminds me of spoiled fruit on a dying branch.

I have met high-school drop-outs that can write better sci-fi than what the douches at SGU are doing.

SGU is not sci-fi.
SGU is not Stargate.
SGU is badly written teenie bs drama.

I'm currently viewing the 2nd season.
I just looooooove the Cardassians.
Good combination of a strong physique, fearsome looks, polite conversational skills and devious scheming traits.
The episode "Cardassians", aptly titled, was a real joy.
Also Gerak is the best.
Is he a tailor or is he really a spy?
He's way better than the Gerak in SG-1 by the way, that guy sucked, and he was ugly too.
Anyways.. I'm looking forward to a lot more Cardassian ploys.

Oh you'll have much to enjoy!

The Cardassians are omnipresent in DS9.

A commenter posted that the alien races are a bit "too humanized" in DS9, and I agree, but I kinda like it. They don't look human, but they love their families (or money), have values, get bummed out, have good days , bad days ... it makes sense.

The Klingons show weakness and boy do they start looking pathetic after loosing a few battles and running out of blood wine!!!

The Ferengi aren't all as fiendish as Quark, and some women on the Ferengi home world aren't all that happy about having to stay home and serve, naked no less.

As usual, reading between the lines, these are all stories about humanity's struggles, mostly ongoing, about materialism, women's rights ...

Classic Star Trek at it's best.

.. of course there's lots of action later on in the series too. Huge battles that are totally movie worthy.

Garak has got to be one of my favorite Star Trek characters ever! :)
