So lets talk about the upcoming Star Trek movie now named Star Trek: Beyond. Besides the continuing awesome cast of Abram's rebooted NuTrek in their new timeline, there are going to be some firsts (and possibly some lasts) for this next film. Some facts everyone should know (SOURCE: IMdB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2660888/trivia?ref_=tt_trv_trv)

  • The NuTrek reboot was a three movie deal all around. Zachary Quinto (Spock) contracted for three movies and he has expressed a desire to move on to other projects. But there is an option for a fourth film.
  • The three NuTrek movies are a trilogy deal (who knew?)
  • This next movie will be shot entirely in Vancouver, BC and not Hollywood (the first of these reboot movies to do so).
  • The sets will be disassembled and shipped to Vancouver (which probably means we get a new Engineering Room because the current one is the Budweiser plant in Van Nuys, CA.)
  • NuTrek will be the vehicle for the 50th Anniversary Star Trek commemoration.

Idris Elba is in this one. I do not know who he will be, or if they will hide him behind some rubber prosthetic, but he is definitely in the movie. And that crusty little beast that hangs out with Scotty? He has been in EVERY NuTrek movie and they are making him part of the "regular" crew. His character name is "Keenser" and he is played by an actor named Deep Roy. He will be in this film as well.

The plot has not yet been leaked. There MIGHT have been a cameo role built in for Leonard Nimoy which is now going to have to be reworked. The initial mention that William Shatner would be in this movie may not be happening after all. So, that is all of the dry stuff. Justin Lin is directing.

From what images have been leaked, we get yet MORE Starfleet uniform changes. Now they look like they came from Firefly or BSG:

And we have new aliens:

startrekbeyondalien.png

This alien looks very Star Wars-ish to me. Since when is facepaint and hair extensions more alien than rubberface? What is with these damned costumes? Starfleet is a MILITARY, not a fashion show. I feel a rant coming on, so let me end this OP with a GIF from my favorite scene in Star Trek: Into Darkness.

I just cant help it. I hate this film and it has not even been finished yet. HATE it. I already know the uniforms have changed, and that transwarp beaming and magic Kahn blood have not. I know that the last Enterprise was destroyed when it crashed into San Francisco, but the new one will be even worse (rumors, no images yet). I think it is insulting that this crappy version of Star Trek is going to be the standard bearer for the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek.

How can I hate it before it has even been finished? Easy. It remains dumbed down and vapid (because of the universe it's in). Everything else is moot. If you try to film a James Bond movie in the Alice in Wonderland universe, how good is it going to be?

I still can't get over the fact that the Romulans were a bunch of guys left over from Mad Max ...

The Enterprise did not crash into San Francisco in Into Darkness - the "supership" did. And yes Into Darkness is still an abomination.

At least we get a new ship. I really want them to get rid of that brewery and the bridge. The whole environment has not given me a sense of space exploration. The sense of it was more juvenile party (brewery engineering, apple store bridge and lens flare galore). The only thing missing was a DJ on deck.

I can see what they're doing with the uniforms, going more military style like in the TOS movies. I just don't like the design very much.

I have to take a wait and see attitude here.

Let's remember that all of the perpetrators of Into Darkness are gone (Abrams, Orci and especially the "writer" - Damon Lindelof). New writers, new director and so on.

I would also note that Scotty in the pics is still in the usual uniform. I think Kirk is wearing their version of the "harsh climate away suit" we saw in Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock.

Also, they have specifically stated already that the story is not Earth based and has them on the five year mission.

So...wait and see.

That was the other ship? I hardly remember it. :) DAMN. Oh well, another reason to hate NuTrek. That monstrosity powered by two hair dryers. Speaking of which, some fans have extrapolated the size of the NuTrek Enterprise by using comparisons to known metrics like Spock's height as compared to the viewing port on the Bridge (which can also be seen on the outside of the model). It comes out to be 1400ft longer and almost three times larger:

I have no choice but to wait and see. But I will not be disappointed (because I already am :)). I expect it to suck like the last two movies, and be shallow and bereft of any resemblance to Star Trek. What I already know has done that.

What if Justin Lin wrote that James Bond movie shot in the Alice In Wonderland universe...would it make the movie good then? :shep_wave2:

Lin is the director. And a successful one at that (Better Luck Tomorrow, Fast and Furious films 3 through 6). It will be interesting to see his approach as his entire style is distinctly different from Abrams. Now the writing, with Orci and Lindelof gone it can't help but not be as idiotic as Into Darkness, given Lindelof's predilection for writing illogical twaddle (lest we forget Lindelof inflicted Prometheus on the world).

Lin is an AWESOME director. But they have handed him a turd to polish. NuTrek has an absolutely AWESOME cast. That was one thing they got right. Just about everything else...needs work or rework. Lots of repair needs to be done before it can move forward in this new timeline (or move it to another one). Its the Trek UNIVERSE they have ruined. The characters can be fixed, but the Star Trek universe that this thing takes place in is fatally damaged. How do you undo the fact that Vulcan was destroyed by a single drop of magical Red Matter that came from nowhere and makes no sense? The Vulcans' fastest most advanced ship (24th Century) was the one Spock took to use the Red Matter to save Romulus and it got caught in the black hole. But the 22nd century Enterprise escaped it by exploding some warp cores (plural)? How do you explain away that Engineering brewery or Kahn reanimation blood? That advanced ship that crashed...it was far superior to the Enterprise. Is Starfleet going to mothball the design just to keep the Enterprise GT?

BTW: Watch Star Trek 2009. You will see that the "phasers" have moving parts and that they evidently fire projectiles (because sparks fly off of things they hit and there is no beam). The sound is like a pistol. Pathetic and tragic. :(

Actually in one of the other threads on NuTrek I demonstrated how to fix almost all the plot problems and do it in about 20 minutes of dialogue. I'm not saying they WILL fix the stuff but they could fix most of it and ignore the rest.

That new one probably has an awesome golf course and a huge wave pool and probably a tennis court with adjoining raquet ball court oh and a movie theatre with a mall for shopping and an indoor theme park with lots of rides ... Who needs a Hola Deck with all that real estate ...

;) ;) ;)

Dont you remember the scene where they were walking around inside of it and it was a two story mall inside? The shuttlebay on the NuTrek Enterprise is large enough to accomodate SEVERAL Klingon D-13 warbirds. The original Enterprise would not be able to.

I remember. But they wont fix anything because they broke those things to begin with. You cannot fix the biggest things wrong with NuTrek with dialogue. They have to be physically fixed. How can you fix the new Enterprise? The Klingons? The uniforms and equipment? The list of things is too long. There is too much wrong. Most Trekkies are just hoping this run of movies is going to peter out so Trek can be rebooted again on TV.

At this point I don't really care what they are doing. Why not have a hoverboard chase like in Back To The Future? :)

There are so many things in NuTrek that leave me shaking my head. I recently watched both of the NuTrek movies back to back which is why I started this thread. Abrams thoroughly trashed the Star Trek universe. The universe itself, not just a few little things. The motivations and character of Starfleet and it's structure are ruined. The uniforms, Starfleet Academy, even how starships are built and how they function. Starships are not built on the ground. And none of the Constitution class ships can land on the ground or fly in the lower atmosphere. There is just thing after thing after thing.

Here is an example of an unforgivable Abrams flub (click to enlarge to big picture).

abrams bridge window.jpg

What's wrong? The bridge viewscreen is NOT a window. The bridge of Starfleet ships do not have a window facing out, it is a VIEWSCREEN. I know that in some of the Star Trek films (notably Nemesis), and on one occasion of Voyager (Year of Hell Part 2), it seemed as though the viewscreen was a window. But it is not. BTW, it was this window and the known height of Zachary Quito and Chris Pine which allowed for the extrapolation of the size of the new Enterprise. You can see that window on the model of the new ship. Calculating the rest of the dimensions is easy.

StarTrek_enterprise_scifiwire.jpg

The corridors...they have linoleum floors...and they are polished?

abrams corridors.jpg

There is no logic to the design of this ship. Curved nacelle struts? The impulse drive at the rear of the saucer section now looks like the Millenium Falcon engine. There are accent lights on the outside of the ship that are decorative and not functional. I just feel so angry about all of this shit he did to Star Trek with only two lousy movies. He laid waste to decades of work built upon by countless fans and writers and designers.
