Shows I wish the SciFi network would “waste” their money on: Babylon Fields

I read an article today on the old Scifiwire site (what is with this company and their rebranding names?) about a pilot for this show that CBS never picked up. And it got me to thinking about the money that the SciFi executives have burned on SGU and how much they will continue to burn, since we can assume that they’re not going to pull the rest of the episodes - the check has been cashed, after all.

Here’s the link to the article:

The full episode is actually on Google video:

For me, there were several extremely creepy moments in this pilot. I don’t know if my love of zombies has me overly biased, but I was completely drawn in! I don’t know why something like this can’t get picked up on a network that is supposed to be focused on science fiction and fantasy. Especially when the Saturday night line-up is usually a mash-up of science fiction and horror.

This is the second show that I’ve seen in as many days that would seem like a perfect fit – the first being, Arc, which Overmind started an earlier thread on. Instead of a 22 episode order, I don’t get why they can’t go the “British” route and stick with anywhere from 6-12 episodes. You keep the budget low and force the storyline to stay tight. Give me at least 5 more episodes of this!!

The zombie cop’s storyline is absolutely fucking brilliant!!!!

I fucking LOVE this show! It opens a whole new area of possibilities. I love the fact that the zombies are not brain-eating mindless creatures. They are the people who were dead, and lives had moved on later without them. Now they are back, it changes so many things...so many stories and concepts to explore! Why dont Syfy exects see whats out there? Why are they wasting money trying to create science fiction when they obviously lack the talent in-house?

What a great find! :tealc_new049:

The zombie putting out his garbage... I'm like, WTF am I watching!! And as fast as the comedy slipped in, it got really creepy once again. Whose attention does this show (and others like it) need to be brought to? I truly can't understand how this one slipped through the cracks.

I first thought I was going to see a twisted take on Night of the Living Dead, but what they have done is take the movies Zombieland and Night of the Living Dead, cleaned up the slapstick and added drama and removed mindless brain-eating and apple crunching sounds, and created something truly unique!

Why isnt there a way to ASK the networks what we want to see (if given choices from multiple choice?) They could save a lot of heartache that way. They could have filmed a pilot for SGU using green screen, then aired it to a focus audience. Then, when the lights came back on the observer panel could note that 2/3 of the audience were slumped in their seats snoring, and they could have saved MILLIONS of dollars.

Oh man, I am so going to have to see this. I told my daughter about it, and she's as eager to see it as I am.

Of course, Ray Stevenson (Rome, the second Punisher) is one of my guilty pleasures.

I know what you mean. When the movie, Paranormal Activity came out last year, it was released nationwide after a 'Demand It!' campaign. I wish there was something along the same lines for tv pilots. Let the public see what you've got to offer, see if anyone is interested and then go from there. I have never seen a zombie movie, where they were, well, intelligent! But instead of new and fresh, tv gives us the same old retreads of cop dramas and soaps about slutty twenty-somethings.

Someone HAD to have read SGU's scripts and new it was a stinker. I'll never understand how that turkey escaped the Thanksgiving table.

If that was the case, how the fuck do all the vampire movies/series get to stay on the air??

I'm assuming cuz vampires are alll purty and glamorous and blond and blue eyed runway models. THEN it's okay to have sex with a dead person. You just can't look like a regular person.

Remember:

Sex with a size ant-leg beautiful model = Acceptable!

Sex with a "Mike & Molly" sized couple = Antichrist!

Wish this show was picked up, looked fab and raised some interesting questions.

Hope the new zombie show coming out 'The Walking Dead' is good but think this one would of been better.

Shows the skiffy channel should waste their money on

Firefly
Babylon sequels
Dresden files (on the fence with that one but the first twelve eps were alright)
LOS series of course
Atlantis movies
Lets ruin another science fiction franchise hey we haven't ruined Lost in space lets give it a whirl (seriously that one was a joke DO NOT DO IT)
I would like to see David Webers off Armageddon Reef put into a Sci fi movie. Even if it was given only four or five million dollars to make I would like to see the movie. I would even pay for it in theatres if it came out.
An avatar- the last airbender that doesn't suck.

All the other living dead type movies feature zombies who are no longer sentient, wander aimlessly searching for normal humans to eat them, bite them, infect them, etc. Usually there are cheesy crunching sounds dubbed in, and the sound of an apple being bitten into for biting somebody's skull open.. Been there, see that. This show has the zombies as just people who came back to life with all their memories and feelings. THAT is a completely new take on it! I only saw something similar in the movie Zombieland, but it was comedy. This one is drama. Truly unique!

Syfy wasting money. You don't say. Seeing what they have done to the sci-fi channel within the last couple of years I no longer want them to produce sci fi shows. They have three good shows that are keeping them afloat right now. Eureka, Wharehouse 13 and Sanctuary. I don't have any expectations for these shows because I believe it is only a matter of time before the execs get their hands on the shows and slowly begin to kill them. Maybe this should go into the I HATE SKIFFY post.
