Scott Bakula reveals there were plans for Enterprise movies

When Enterprise started airing in 2001, no one thought the show would be canceled four years later. In fact, the original plan, before things went bust, was that Enterprise would be the next Star Trek movie franchise, following in the footsteps of the original Star Trek crew and The Next Generation.
That's what Scott Bakula—who played Capt. Jonathan Archer, the very first captain of the very first starship Enterprise (the NX-01) on the series—revealed during his appearance at Germany's FedCon:
"We [Enterprise] were going to be the next movie franchise. Going in that's what we were told."

I still would have watched it...despite the criticism towards the show

Somewhere along the line, some bright mind decided that Star Trek is a "brand" and you can just put it on anything and the fans will come. This one called itself "Enterprise" (sans Star trek) and had things wrong from the beginning....a theme song with VOCALS? No Star Trek in the title, and set as a PREQUEL to all of Trek? It was barging into hallowed territory and it felt more like desecration to the franchise than a fresh new direction.

Brad Wright lost it along the line too. This video is proof:

In the case of Enterprise, they had already planned its meteoric rise to the cream of the crop of Trek, and it would be the new Trek Messiah which would carry the franchise into legend for generations to come . Somebody looked too far into the future to see dollar signs, when they should have been looking week to week for plots and exciting stories to tell.

I wonder if Bacula got his Captain Archer action figure marketed?

Enterprise had an impossible job from day one, as making a prequel show for a canon as complex as Star Trek was bound to alienate the fans, which is what it did. It is also next to impossible to generate any real sense of peril when everyone knows how the future will play out.

Back then, prequels were all the rage for some reason. I still don't get prequels, it's the worst possible thing to do and yet many writers/producers do them. I knew ENT would be a bad idea and wahey, I was proven right.

Bleh... I thought Scott Bakula was a terrible choice for the captain. Then later when I heard he charges something like $100 for a signed photo, yugh.

So I'm glad that there were no "Enterprise" movies to further feed his ego.

Depending on the context of these words:

"... Stargate is really in a stronger place than it has been ever before as a franchise ..."

If it's pre SGU's airing then he's right. SG was in a stronger place than before with SG1, SGA and two movies under its belt.

However, if it was post SGU's airing, well ... :rotflmao::laughing: and would also like to inquire what he was sniffing at the time to make him so self-deluded. I want some!

It was badly executed. A prequel could have been done successfully as a mini-series, a very focused one on the beginnings of the Federation.

True. Sometimes the brilliant performance of one leading actor can make the difference between a decent and a bland show. Bakula certainly wasn't it.

I know this will get my head bit off. But here I go. :icon_e_surprised: I kinda liked Enterprise, not so much Bakula... he was so-so. But I loved Tripp and T'Pol. I was not happy with some of the story lines, but some were good too. I guess maybe I am just a sucker for any form of Star Trek or Stargate for that matter.

Tripp and T'Pol were interesting, and their respective actors were really good. Bakula just was the wrong captain for the job. They needed someone with a different kind of stage presence, IMO.

They needed a more imposing guy in that chair. Somebody like Mitch Pileggi (Col Steven Caldwell of SG-1 and Atlantis). REAL men.

I always pictured Caldwell as a Trek captain. He would have been great. :)

You know, I never even considered Mitch... but you're absolutely right. He has exactly the right kind of presence for an Enterprise captain. :)

Definitely a good choice.

Bacula is not a bad looking guy nor is he not masculine enough. But he lacks that "presence" and somehow he didnt strike me as particularly ballsy. He came off more like a blue-shirt than a Captain.

Honestly. Enterprise's problems were split pretty much 50/50 between UPN and B&B. UPN wanted TNG 3.0 and nixed the planned first season that would've been about building the Enterprise and getting the crew together in favor of more planet/alien of the week stories, while Berman was clinging on to respecting what Gene would've wanted for far too long and didn't do enough to either get UPN to see that TNG 3.0 wasn't going to work and/or getting a lot of new blood into the writers room. Braga was just a major display of the creative burnout of churning out three Trek shows within 10-15 years.

Yes, all those problems. But it still made it on the air for 4 seasons. Not too shabby.

I would not mind seeing him in anything. LOL He does have a nice presence about him. I truly, think that he could carry it off.
You'll get your wish, he's starring in "Blood and Chrome" and in the upcoming tv movie "Exit strategy"... no telling if there will be naked abs involved yet.
