Saab files for bankruptcy

The auto industry was thriving when I first worked for it. Each year they gave the factory employees thousands of dollars in bonuses. Even more, like 15,000 off a car purchase. In the meanwhile they dumbed down their quality and creativity and cut back on administrative staff. Entire zones were shut down. They even got desperate enough to force all dealership employees to take a selling course. My dealership refused to spend money to compete and went under 3 years ago. It was an ugly mess. They should have not oversaturated the market with rebates and learned how to save for a rainy day when they were rolling in the dough.

Hearing all that being said by your Avatar standing there in her underwear is priceless. :icon_lol:

Rebates aren't the only thing that killed them. Unions, bloated and unnecessary expenses and fat bonuses contributed to their demise.

Yes, she is complex. She was devasted when the auto industry went to pieces. Ford did fare much better than Chrysler and GM. Btw, I mentioned the Grand Prix, which kicks butt, because of the Firebird comment.

I always found Ford's European counterparts to their American offerings were far superior. The Escort was lower, wider and had more pep. The Scorpio was sleeker and more powerful than the Taurus. If you hated the Scorpio and it was superior to its American counterpart, imagine how bad Fords used to be here. :icon_lol:

Well to be fair the Scorpios (at least the station wagon versions) are excellent work horses who could go on forever if it wasn't for one tiny snag. You see, they rusted to pieces as soon as they came into contact with slightly damp weather.

Yeah, maybe we should let that one rest. Bush started the bailouts.

Agreed...pin the bailout tail on Bush and Cheney, since they are the ones who handed out all the gifts and also conceived of them in the first place, not Obama.

I'd rather just grab an old Volvo 240 instead. Now that's a sturdy car!

Or an old Mercedes! (pre 2000). My W124 is still running like a champ, looks almost showroom new, and it's PAID FOR! Its a lot more car than the chintzy C-class with it's acres of plastic and anemic engine. :) The Volvo 240 is my second choice, (pre Ford). The breadbox wagon is amongst the world's most durable cars.

NOT MINE (But I have the same year, same model and paint with gray lower cladding). I do not have pinstriping, and I have chrome Mercedes wheels but the car is 100% stock.

The Volvo 240. Very Baronial!

The Volvo 240 would be my second choice. I am a "sensible shoes" sort pf person when it comes to cars. Spend the money on a higher end car that is WELL MADE and it will serve you for decades. I am not certain cars fall into that class anymore, including Mercedes, BMW and Lexus. The best made cars have moved upscale out of reach like Rolls, Maybach, Bentley, Aston, etc. The build quality of the older Saabs and Volvos and Mercedes would cost LOTS more today than before when they were over-engineered.

Yeah those are great cars too. Speaking of the C-class' and its poor engine and and plasticy interior, it's also very much like the Ford Scorpio in the way that it has that tendency to completely rust to pieces. Mercedes used to have a great track record, and I have to ask myself, what the hell happened?

Still, the older Mercs like the one you have are great. Excellent build quality and if you treat them right they will last you a lifetime. My buddy's cousin had one and it could get past any obstacle. At least until he gave it to his brother in exchange for a Volvo 740 wagon. That Merc could survive almost anything, except for bad driving since his brother crashed it into a tree about a month ago. What a waste of a perfectly good car.

It's a bit sad actually when you think about what had become of the once great carmakers like Saab, Volvo or Mercedes. They used to make great cars which really stood out thanks to their build quality and imaginative engineering, but now there's nothing at all separating them from the rest. I wouldn't even recognize a new Merc if I saw one on the street (except for the hideous A-class). It'd be completely anonymous to me. A piece of car. A few feet of car. Nothing else.

Though when they put Volvos into production based on this, I will definitely take notice.

Well thanks a lot GM. Not only did you sell the car brand to the most unsuitable buyer there was, but then you made every effort to try and prevent Saab from having either the slightest chance of surivival when it actually was a "independent" entity. And now because of your fear of having a little competition on the Chinese market, almost 4000 people will lose their jobs just six days before christmas.

No matter how you feel about the company (omni), you can't disagree that GM grossly mismanaged the company and just grabbed all the technology ever developed by it, slapped a GM (or in most cases, Opel) sticker on it, and then left what little remained of the once fun and quirky car company to rot away.
i completly agree bud.

Skyline's are fun cars, and much faster than most people would think. I had the pleasure of riding shotgun in one on a track this summer. Fun as hell!
