My thoughts on CONTACT

Reasons I liked this movie.
In the movie Contact Jodie Foster portrays a young woman who has lost her father and is left alone and directionless, except for her driving need for exploration. For a movie that is pre year 2000 the images and graphics are stupendous and amazing. The special effects are beautiful and the story begins with an underdog.

(Too bad Stargate never had this kind of funding because a boatload was dropped on this movie (a $90 million boatload))

I like the graphics, and the actors obviously put everything they had into making this film.

Reasons I didn’t like this movie.

But to me there isn’t much difference between racism and being prejudice because of someone’s religion, no matter what that peaceful religion may be. The use of the Science fiction genre (something I love), to mock religion (any religion) is inexcusable.

This movie is a solid 8. I deducted points because Robert Zemeckis attempts to teach a point by blatantly biasing the movie. I fast forwarded a lot but the scenes with special effects are more than worth it. Zemeckis chose to mock Christianity and portray Christians as nut jobs and suicide bombers; if you aren’t a Christian then this movie is sure to please. I am glad I watched it, but for me it has little replay value.

I liked Contact, but I didnt love it. I dont have any issues with the religious aspect vs science, but I had issues with the story. I liked the whole part about receiving the signal, the eccentric billionaire who figured out the 3D design, and the device itself. And the effects were incredible! But it could have been so much more. Less politics and religion for sure.

I wouldn't have had to comment on it if Zemeckis hadn't made it such an obvious and integral aspect of the story. If you wanted the machine to blow up then have some terrorist plant a bomb. I didn't mind the old guy they brought up mid-story but that was because I was analyzing what the movie's message was supposed to be. I will grant that the ending tried to tie up the story into a neat little package but the preceeding chaos of the story made it impossible. It is really sad because Jodie foster did well in the scene that they were grilling her in front of the committee board. But if you have to analyze a movie during the first viewing, then the film itself fails as a story. I couldn't agree more with your comment. Worth a viewing but like I said before this movie has little replay value for me.

I read the book but never got around to watching the film. It's probably been a good 8 years since I read it but I don't remember any Christian bombers in the book. How faithful is the movie to the actual book? I don't read much non-fiction but I read Contact because I'm a huge fan of Carl Sagan. The Cosmos series was one main reasons I got into science in the first place.

Let me be extremely clear. I have a library of science fiction books and I have yet to scratch the surface of the genre. So when I say that I haven't read the book please don't get angry because over the summer I was reading three sci-fi books a week. Now that you know that I haven't read the book I can't honestly say what the differences are. But I'm sure they have contact that you can stream from somewhere on the internet. It is only a two hour movie and it is a good movie but like I said above the slanted approach they took made me angry. Like life you will have to watch it for yourself and let us know if there are differences. I am currently trying to keep up with school (just barely keeping up) and my writing (which is suffering because of the former).
