Matt Smith not planning to quit Doctor Who

Actor Matt Smith has stated he isn't planning on quitting Doctor Who anytime soon and hopes to continue in the role for some time to come.

The actor took over the role of the Doctor from David Tennant last year and officially is the 11th actor to portray the Time Lord. The sixth series of Doctor Who returns later this month (it will be Smith's second in the role) and with the press coverage gearing up for the shows premier the inevitable question of how long Matt Smith intends to stay in the role was raised.

"It's certainly not a part I want to give up anytime soon, and I love playing it.....I kind of take it a year at a time and I finish shooting this season in a month so thereafter we'll wait and see. There's a Christmas special so I guess that means that everyone will sit down and figure it out but it's certainly something I'm keen to be involved with because I love it, I love playing Doctor Who, or rather the Doctor in Doctor Who - it's a thrilling job so who knows?" - Matt Smith quoted on the Press Association

Since Doctor Who was revived in 2005 there have been, including Matt Smith, three actors in the title role. Christopher Eccleston stayed for just one season bowing out in the season one finale Parting of the Ways. His successor David Tennant stayed for full three seasons and a fourth year of specials bowing out in The End of Time Part Two.

Great news! I for one think Matt Smith is awesome. He is a great replacement for David.

I like Matt's somewhat quieter Doctor, and also that under Moffat we've returned to the notion that emotional moments exist to serve the plot - not the other way around (like it was at the tail end of Tennant's run - to me The End of Time was an emotionally overwrought piece of slop).

I kinda like Matt's take on the Doctor, so I'm glad about this.

But... is it wrong if I want him to say farewell to Amy Pond and get a different companion?

I really don't mind Amy. She is a little abrasive at times but it needs to be remembered that an integral part of the plot in the previous season centered on the fact that her character was "incomplete". The time cracks had absorbed her parents and thus her development was different than it should have been. Plus parts of her past were simply gine, also affecting her. This was restored in the finale, so it will be interesting to see her personality going forward - in fact in the Christmas special she did have a softer edge to her personality.

I don't hate Amy Pond but I won't cry when her story line is done and she's replaced. I absolutely love Alex Kingston as "River Song" though. She's so damn good!

I guess I have to be in the minority here by saying that Amy is probably my favorite companion of the new series, with Donna as a close runner up. However I only count regular companions so if I'm counting recurring companions like River Song and Madame de Pompadour (who I'd love see again even though it probably won't happen) they'd rank higher.

Part of what makes River Song (a creation of Steven Moffat by the way) so fascinating is that we are, in effect, seeing her story "out of order". We saw the conclusion first and now we are building up to the events that led to that conclusion. Plus they have set the stage for Alex Kingston (delightful actress) to be a companion in the future (namely she is a future companion - if not more).

She's the only one that knows his name so that tells me there's way more to her story than we know. I can't shake the feeling that she is Dr. Who herself, in some weird way (but Dr. Who is a weird show). I know it doesn't make sense based on the current story line but there's definitely more to her than meets the eye.

My current favorite Doctors are Chris Eccleston and Matt Smith.

Tennant was a bit too much over the top for me, though I know he had an enormous number of fans out there.

I love Tennant, thought he was so cool. :D

I'll admit, not a major fan of Matt Smith but he does a good job, so can't fault him.

I'm not a massive fan of Smith's time as The Doctor. A part of that is possibly because so much time was spent on Amy Pond's story instead of letting us get to know Eleven. Amy's annoying as heck to me, but hopefully will improve. I loathed Donna Noble in her first appearance, but she now ranks highest among the companions introduced in the new series. Now that the whole crack in the wall thing is done, I have hope Amy won't get on my nerves so much.

I'm also apparently in the teeny tiny minority who would be perfectly fine never seeing River Song again. Have never liked the actress in anything, so that alone made me predisposed to not like her, but I don't really care for what the character's done either. She's annoying in a smug way, while Amy was an annoying prat.

I really wish we could have had some carryover for the last season. We started out with new showrunner, new Doctor and new Companion. Made it really hard for me to latch onto the characters without a known quantity around from the previous season. Didn't bother me with Nine because it was theoretically a new show, with potentially a lot of new viewers who'd never seen the original series (or at least not all of it, especially in the US) but at this stage in the game it felt like another reboot.

Sorry, but it was time for RTD to go. The quality of the scripts went downhill in the last full season (Journey's End was terrible) and the specials were also awful (The End of Time is IMHO the worst piece of televised SciFi ever). His predilection towards EMO (Emotionally Overwrought) stuff and also making the Doctor an EMO demigod was dragging everything down.

Moffat has created a breath of fresh air - plot has been restored to the place of importance it should occupy (everything else serves the plot not the other way around). Matt Smith has brought back the quieter, more alien Doctor that really works the best, and he and Karen Gillan do play well off of each other (as does the actor who portrays Rory). It showed up well both in the Christmas Special (which had a really nice "gentle" vibe to it) and the little web based "preseason" thing they did (Time and Space).

Yeah I completely agree with what you're saying. Have some green.

I would agree with this

The changing of the guard was needed. RTD had gotten too mushy/Politically Correct/melodramatic.

I'm not the biggest fan of Rory though. He's too much of a distraction. They did the jealous BF thing way back with Rose Tyler so I don't see the point of Rory much. The only good thing is that he gives Amy something to do when the Doctor is having fun with River Song. That's about it. Otherwise he should be jettisoned quick.
