this is why I don't bother with the olympics any more. In 1996 (I think) the US women's gymnastics team all sounded like a bunch of munchkins....there were some human growth hormone issues I bet or something else that was making them undersized and sounding like munchkins. one of my profs had some interesting theories on what drugs/gene therapies they may have been using. I haven't really followed them since the 1980 Lake Placid winter games.

I like Olympic hockey and curling is pretty cool too (probably no doping there).

The summer games are usually a yawn for me, but I can't wait for rugby sevens in 2016. :)

1996 gave us Kerri Strug's vault - that was pure guts especially considering the doctors misdiagnosed it and it was both a sprain and two torn ligaments.

Yup, the voice is a definite give away.

Growth hormone doesn't affect the voice but steroids (synthetic testosterone) in high doses will, especially in women. Flooding their bodies with testosterone causes non-reversible virilization in women with noticeably visible physiological changes such as chest hair, deepening of the voice and widening of the jaw but, again, that's in high doses. Growth hormone isn't an anabolic steroid.

The two signs I notice most about steroid users are acne and deepening of the voice. It's funny how many young Jersey Shore-type juice heads speak in a real husky voice and have outbreaks of acne. It's even funnier (and a bit sad) when they go off cycle and get all flabby and fat.

:D You just described a majority of the juice heads who have no clue what they're doing. I know several people who have juiced most of their adult lives without any complications other than back acne, which goes away when discontinued. Some of these guys will go off juice for months at a time, even years. The difference between these guys and your "Jersey Shore-type juice heads" is they know what they're doing, how to cycle and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle whether on or off. Most people think juicing is some kind of magic muscle potion that puts on 30 lbs of instant muscle in 30 days. What they don't see is the amount of work and discipline in both exercise and dieting these guys put in on and off. The ones who know what they're doing understand that juicing is a helpful aid in recuperation, healing and protein synthesis whereas the ones who don't use it as a crutch in place of bad training and dieting and those are the guys you'll see blow up, lose it all and get fat. :D

In any case, even the so-called "natural" professional bodybuilding competitors will use non-androgenic substances like insulin, which is not illegal, can be acquired without a prescription and can blow you up faster than any anabolic steroid cocktail and strip fat like you're melting it off with a blowtorch. But, its use requires meticulous timing and a strict regimen or you risk insulin shock.

Talking to some of these guys one would almost swear they have biology or chemistry degrees. Not your typical "meatheads" by any stretch of the imagination.
