I am rewatching this on Netflix, and man...TNG was really cheesy/soapy in Season 1. I just watched an episode where Deanna Troi had a baby from some passing entity who wanted to understand Humanity by living as a human. :rolleye0014:. It was only passably watchable, but when I watched it years ago I liked it. Go figure. It had tears, Wesley Crusher being granted permission to stay on the Enterprise (he was still fresh faced then), and ths ship still seemed like a flying suburb than a starship.

i thought it was cheesy and soapy throughout all of it, only in the movies did they somewhat loose that feeling imo.

I remember bailing from this show in the middle of season 1 and later "rediscovering" the series in season 4 or 5. Season 1 is mostly unwatchable IMO.

IMO, "Yesterday's Enterprise" marked a turning point but it wasn't very watchable until somewhere between season 5 and 6.

There is a reason why I now own all of Voy and DS9 and not TNG. Don't get me wrong, I like TNG, alot, but Voy for all its "redo's" did them better than TNG.

I usually dip into Voyager's files when I want to watch Trek. ONLY episodes after season 4 with Seven of Nine in them and not Kes. :) Second choice is DS9 and I like to watch all the two parters. or 4-episode arcs. It remains my favorite "serious" Trek. Then TOS with its campiness and simplicity and finally TNG. Usually, TNG post season 3. And Enterprise is very enjoyable to watch but just does not feel like Trek to me. I have come to appreciate it as Trek-like.

But season 1 of TNG is a real eyeroll fest. I never saw it as that when it was being aired, but now...basically unwatchable.

Of all the Stargate series, I liked SG-1 the best. :) But only the first 5 seasons or so. After that it kinda became silly. The introduction of the earth ships ruined it for me.

DS9 was a soap. Then, to shake that soap image they dug themselves into, they stretched the Jem Hadar wars out to a point where I wished they'd just win and be done with it. It took Odo to end the war. Let's not forget my other all time favorite Star Trek addition to canon, magical "wormhole beings".

Personally, DS9 is the only Trek series that I can stand. I watched a few seasons of Voyager when some channel aired reruns every afternoon over here a few years back, but in the end I stopped because I just couldn't stand the inconsistent plotting and characterization. Granted, most of the issues I had are to blame on the writers, not the actors. Except for maybe Robert Beltran. He could've been replaced by a cardboard cut out and I wouldn't have noticed the difference.

I liked Voyager for the most part but you're right about Beltran. His existence was pretty pointless. And once they introduced "7 of 9" then "B'elanna Torres" got marginalized. It's like they had several characters they didn't know what to do with. And don't even get me going on "Neelix". :tealcanime23:

The show did have some serious flaws and general goofy-ness but overall it was okay. It seemed to me that they wrote themselves into a corner or two in the first season and it took awhile to get out. Plus the later addition of kids to the mix (Naomi Wildman) was pretty much a sign that the show was done. It usually is when they introduce kids.

Neelix - useless

Kes - no idea why they felt a magical elf was needed on the show

7 of 9 - boobs and to reel in wanker boys, nothing more, nothing less

Kazon - the most useless adversary in scifi next to the Loser Alliance on SG1. Their ships were blimps that could be taken out with a pebble and slingshot yet, for some reason, they gave Voyager a hard time

Caretaker - why couldn't they have Voyager get sucked out 70k light years by some unknown space anomaly instead?

In spite of all that nonsense, Voyager was a fun ride but far too many filler episodes.

Every time I tried to endure an episode of DS9, this was playing in the back of my mind.

Neelix should have been dumped when they got rid of Kes. And Beltran, damn...he should have been killed off. They could easily have gotten a new 1st Officer from the existing crew. But still, for single episodes, Voyager always does the trick. And although DS9 had soap elements, it was never really soapy to the degree of SGU or even close. I did not like the introduction of the kids in Voyager either. Kids and science fiction just cheese up a show. But at least kids can talk. BABIES are the worst thing to have in any show, along with on-air weddings between characters. Who are they pandering to with character weddings and babies and baby showers? I thought they handled O'Brien's baby thing with Keiko pretty well. Alas, I could not stand Keiko with her Soccer Mom whineyness.

But back to this Season 1 of TNG, it just is basically unwatchable. Its painful to see Deanna Troi as a cheerleader with those ridiculous outfits and all that makeup and lip gloss.

Agreed on all points. I did find the acting to be good on Voyager compared to DS9 which was like watching an empty fish tank. I'm sorry but Avery Brooks was just leaden in his delivery.

I forgot about that! :smiley-laughing021: Leftover 80's influence for sure on the big, frizzy haired look. The matronly up-do didn't really suit her either.

DS9 had entire seasons that did nothing to advance the story, spent whole episodes in soap and could have been completely deleted.
