And having seen Furious 7, I have to admit they handled it well.
Using a combination of SFX and standins by Paul Walker's brother they managed to make it feel like he did not die. And the way he was written out was very character appropriate.
Also, they added a new member to the team who seems to be more a replacement for Gal Gadot (Gisele) than Paul Walker. And Jason Statham as the baddie worked great too.
Story wise, it is definitely a popcorn muncher not a brain burner, and the car stunts this time around are definitely in the Road Runner / Wile E Coyote realm. But it is a lot of fun. Everyone does their parts well, and we get a good performance from Kurt Russell as a friend of Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) who calls himself "Mr. Nobody".
