Umm, niether your statement, nor thier response makes any sense to me, sorry dude :(
Are you saying it is NOT Sci-fi, or that it is?

To me its not really Sci-Fi that's what I am saying but the people on another forum and the critics and reviews seem to label and tag as Sci-Fi.

OMG, has anybody seen this? I just TRIED to watch it, and it just...I couldnt continue. I kept jumping it forward, and could not resist moving the slider around skipping ahead. I cant get past the drawn in beard mustache thing. Looks like a joke to me. The costumes and smarmy lines just turned me off. I will have to force myself to see it all the way through. Not liking what I see so far.

That's what bugs me about this movie, stylistically it seems horribly contrived and forced. Couple this with the egregious advertising and faux news reports pumping it (pimping it actually) and the whole thing just becomes a huge turn off. The fact that they think the goofy costumes and make-up will titillate people is rather insulting actually. Those things should be incidental to the movie; in the back ground so to speak. But the commercials seem to focus on them, like the weird facial hair and coiffures.

Just give me a good story and don't treat me like a slack-jawed moron with your advertising and chances are I will be interested in seeing what you're offering.

I saw it and I really enjoyed it. The costumes and silly stuff makes sense in context - you're meant to think its ridiculous and pompous, it's part of the effect the film is trying to create.

But yeh, I'd advise people to watch it beginning to end and try and take it in with a fresh mind. I'm (shockingly) actually looking forward to the sequel. Good effort.

OMG. I wonder if you are representative of the target audience? If so, then I think we are in for some "interesting" material coming from the studios. I dont know if I like this at all. Dont the people ho go to this stuff and pay money realize that this is like a green light for the producers of this crap? They respond very quickly to rejection.

I really don't think it's a bad movie. At worst it's a well made movie for teens, at best it's quite clever and appeals on a few levels. Something like Wrath of the Titans is what should appall people, not a movie that's obviously had a lot of care and attention put into it.

Bah! A kids movie is a kids movie is a kids movie. Harry Potter was an exception to this rule because it was well written and produced. It didn't insult with egregious derivative-ness. It didn't need to be pimped like a cheap whore ad nauseum. It sold itself to both children and adults alike. But this movie, blah!
:puke:

As for Wrath of the Titans, well, that's a completely different story and genre. The two aren't easily comparable. Nor is WotT being whorishly pimped to us. Besides, Sam Worthington is cool. ;)

Errr HP WAS pimped out ad nausem Shaved.................

But HP was unique and excellent, and test audiences confirmed their hopes before the movie was released and contracted for all the ones that followed. This movie is awful if you are an adult, and "strange" if you are a child. Its so immature in its storytelling that it might as well be a school play. Just LOOKING at this movie with no sound still makes you want to turn it off or walk away. Just my opinion.

Agreed! HP was advertised a ton, but was also based on a popular book like Hunger Games. I guess I need to read more... :P

The clue to the crappiness of this movie was its immediate self-comparisons to Harry Potter and Twilight. If I want to see a movie "like Harry Potter", then I will watch HARRY POTTER. Harry Potter did not come out saying it was like another movie did it? I never buy any item that compares itself to another product or item. I just take the statements as meaning "we are a less expensive, less desirable knockoff of __________ <--insert better thing here"

As a teen targeted film I am unlikely to watch this thing in any event. But from what I have heard of it the source novel is a sort of dystopian fantasy where the games are punishment imposed on the resource and food short outer provinces by the totalitarian regime they staged a failed rebellion against. The provinces have to watch select youths from their areas die each year for the entertainment of the elites in the regime.

Now that premise could actually be made into a good film, but whether they did it here I would not know, although from some statements here it sounds like the "kidded" it up too much.

This movie would have had a test audience, hence why a sequel was in production before this one was even released and why all the actors are contracted for adaptations of the next two books. It's not like the first Harry Potter film is that great a watch for adults. As for your last point, I couldn't disagree more. It's a well made film.

Every movie compares itself to something, even if its a simple "from the director of" or "from the studio that brought you". The marketing departments of studios are almost completely separate from the creative teams. Plus for that matter the adverts for this were clever in not actually showing the 'Hunger Games' part of the film which shows a certain amount of confidence in the product.

The book is a young adult novel, it's not really suitable for anybody over 16 (imo). The movie features kids murdering other kids though, it's hardly a childrens film.

That may be the case bud, but it is not what I was saying. The assertion that HP wasn't pimped out is false, VERY false.
As to it's look and writing, it's Teen fiction dude, you can't exactly judge it by entirely "kids standards" or "Adult standards" either. I just finished reading the second "Percy jackson" book again, it's hardly "a tour de force of the writing art", but it is a bit of a fun story, with all the expected "trimmings" of Teen fantasy, and thats what I judge it by.

If you really wanted I'm sure we could find MANY examples of HP being compared to other *older* works of fiction, it is, after all, a "Coming of age/hero's journey" story. One example that springs immediatly to mind is "Magician" (which if anyone here who likes fantasy has not read needs a good beating..... :P). DID HP have it's own unique spin on the story, for sure, and that spin is what made it good, but if you *REALLY* want to disect it, you will probably find it hits all the major bases of *any* work of teen fiction, and HG probably hits the exact same bases, just in a way, that doesn't appeal to you (and from all I have read, probably me as well TBH :P )

My assertion is only false if you misunderstand what I'm positing. HP wasn't "pimped" out -- it was properly advertised. There is a difference here. The book was wildly popular -- wildly popular before it became a movie. In fact, Rowling's tale of the boy wizard was so popular it garnered the attention of people like Steven Spielberg who knew it was a successful property even though nothing like it had existed before. Spielberg called doing the movie a "slam dunk" at the time even though it was completely new. This ubiquitous opinion was all based on the books, which sold themselves.

Compare this to THG and you'll see that it is riding on HP's coat tails, and Twilight's, neither of which needed to be compared to any other movie or story as they were original. Even the advertising for THG is comparing the movie to both HP and Twilight, which is pandering (pimping) at a ridiculous level. THG isn't comparable to HP so that's just a stupid attempt to pander (pimp) to an audience. As for it's comparison to Twilight with the teen angst/romance style that is pandering (pimping) because they're making a direct comparison in an attempt to garner that particular audience. Twilight didn't need to compare itself, ad nauseum, to HP or any other movie because the books had created a big enough audience by word of mouth. The movie then sold itself via the same method. Sure there was advertising but one had to discover what the movie was about on their own, they didn't have comparisons shoved in their face with every commercial.

Bottom line: If The Hunger Games is so original and such a great story it doesn't need to be egregiously compared, ad nauseum, to other successful movies, especially ones that it has nothing in common with such as Harry Potter. The two stories are completely different, their genres completely different, their two styles completely different. To compare the two is an obvious attempt to suck off the success of HP and that is pandering (pimping). Same with using Twilight to promote the movie. Pimping pimping pimping.

As for my statement that THG is a kids story, well, that's what it is. The difference between THG and HP when it comes to being classified as a kids story is that HP was so well written, and actually matures in tone and style as the story progresses, that grown adults can enjoy the books on an adult level. Even your vaunted Stephen King, a very mature adult, thinks they are suitable for adults to read. THG though smacks of simply being in the "young adult" genre with no plans to go anywhere. Nuff sed.

1) Neither Harry Potter nor Twilight were particularly original. The Hunger Games is just as unique as them, despite obviously targeting the same audience. The reason the films are being compared is because a critic said it was just as good as those franchises - that's a quote any respectable advertiser would make the most of.
2) This movie has made more than the first Harry Potter film did. Seems this is a little bit more of a 'slam dunk'.
3) You've formed an opinion of this movie without even seeing it. That's a pretty terrible way to judge it.
4) There's a Stephen King quote on the front of The Hunger Games novel calling it compelling also saying "I couldn't stop reading". For many years, as with Harry Potter, these books sold themselves.

Shut up Yoshi, just shut up. Seriously, you're not worthy of engaging in intellectual discourse. You can't even honestly respond to my points, you just blather some inane nonsense that has nothing to do with what I wrote and everything to do with the biased fantasy in your delusional head. I'm not sure how old you are chronologically but based on the stuff you post on a regular basis I'd peg you at about 14 years old. Children are annoying. You're annoying. Go away.
