Cat Lovers Thread

Such happy cats! All four of them are showing happy-tail :) How are the kittens you were talking about a couple of months ago? Has mama cat weaned them yet?

the 2 on the outside of the "formation :cameron21:" are the sons of the "mad crapper" mom i talked about

by that time, the other mom-in the above pic center left-was nursing her one kit-next to her (we call her "Midge(t)" since she was so small and we didn't think she would survive). A frequent egg customer came by and had recently lost her cat and wanted a female

i told her about the situation and she still wanted her, so it solved our mad crapping situation

we have one more cat, not in the pic, who is a mottled, mostly dark brown, with stripes and flecks of tan, light brown and white

these cats are about at their 4th or 5th gen from the originals we had about 10yrs ago

unfortunately, their ancestors were mainly lighter color and got picked off by Bald EAGLES AND HAWKS. The darker ones were camo'd better and of course their offspring tended to be grayer and darker--great camo for here. Observable natural selection at work...

I started re-reading this thread, and now it seems odd that not too long ago, my newest cat Fisher (who I adopted from a buddy who got married to a woman who is allergic to cats and was expecting), was spitting and hissing and hiding from the other cats who were harassing him. He got attacked once so bad he had an abscess on his back that was more than 3 inches across and I had to take him to the vet to have it drained and give him antibiotics (I have pictures of that too). Today, they are all a "pride" even if they are not best buddies. There are no more fights, and mostly peaceful moments like this:

But Fisher has now decided that I am "his" and yesterday he suddenly jumped up on the couch where Dante usually snuggles up to me, and he put his paw on my leg and laid his head against me. Never did that before. He has never shown that level of affection for me before then. Unfortunately, he now chases Dante and Siete away from me when I am sitting in the living room. Siete tries to climb up on me and Fisher comes along and swats at him from the coffee table or jumps up on the couch to chase him off my lap. Siete is not liking that, and just now I found that he peed on my pillow. He has NEVER peed on anything of mine or outside of his litterbox. I just put it in the washing machine.

Anybody understand what is going on here? Is Siete angry or sad? Is his behavior one of frustration or separation anxiety?

:smiley-laughing024: Actually Dante and Siete are tuxedo black and white and Fisher is black on the outside but white underneath (smoke). But I got the joke. :)

Why are so many people uninformed about cats and cat behavior? Like any other intelligent animal which does not speak English, dogs and cats have to learn how to communicate with their humans and the humans need to learn some non-verbal cat language. Im posting this because I just got back from taking Siete for a walk. Yes, a walk. My cat (Siete only) actually follows me out to the walk and sniffs around the bushes and rolls in the grass like a dog. He does not run away, he does not go where he should not go, and when it is time to go back in the house I call him and he comes. People who have seen me do this nightly say that it's completely bizarre. Really? Some of them have cats and their cats either want to run outside away from home, or they refuse to go out. Also, Siete is VERY vocal. He "speaks" to every human he sees, and he has a very loud forceful meow. But most everything I read says that cats do not vocalize to other cats, only to humans. Did I just get lucky?

Based upon my experience with my 3 furballs, they have a means of communication that we poor humans simply can't detect. Might be audible, but above the range of human hearing, might be scent-based, I dunno. but I'm pretty sure they communicate with each other in some way that I can't detect.
Mine like to get into cupboards, closets and such, and once in a while the door gets closed behind them. On more than one occasion, I've found one or more sitting in front of a cupboard or closet door, and sure 'enough, if I open the door, another one of 'em has gotten him/herself locked in. Somehow, the one who is locked in calls his/her siblings for help, while I hear nothing. I've even had one of 'em insistently wake me up in the middle of the night, and lead me to a door, behind which another one waits to be let out.

WHEW! Another guy with three cats here! :) Please feel free to post pics or talk about your feline owners. I originally planned to just adopt two cats who are not siblings but are great friends, and my apartment was partially selected on pet friendliness for that reason. But about a year after I moved in, one of my co-worker/friends got engaged and finally married to a woman who is allergic to cats. He did not know either of the first two cats and was never around other cats. So, that was a nightmare for a while. But today, they are a pride. :)

But Siete in particular IS a strange sorta cat. He is a very dog-like cat. He is a Maine Coon and is over 20 pounds (they are the largest cat breed). He has seven toes on each paw, hence his name. He is the only one who wants to go out but he is such a good cat he stays by me as I supervise his walk, without a leash. He plays fetch, and can open my door if it is not locked. He watches TV intently, and will whine until I turn it on (doesnt matter what is on, even YouTube or a Word document or just the desktop wallpaper). I could go on, and I have. Check the thread out and post pics/vids if you want.

if this video hasn't been altered or edited-it is pretty funny to hear the cat 'talking' the way it is

Adoptions? I have become an incurable cat lover now. I dont necessarily want any more than the three I have, but I cannot imagine my life without a cat in it now. Most people dont "get" cats. :) I love dogs and everyone gets dogs...they are awesome and expressive and they are easy to communicate with. Cats are more difficult, but I would argue that they have higher standards than dogs when it comes to relationships they have with humans (and with dogs and other animals). When you know their language, they communicate very clearly. :)

A cat stays with you because it actually likes you, not because it has to stay.

(Cats are loners, while dogs are pack animals and are always looking for a pack of which to be a part.)
