As much as I would echo your sentiments about the next ST director I think chances are they will get someone that tries to out do Abrams in the "Teen angst + lots of CGI explosions" department. :(

I only wonder how long this trend of cynically trashing popular franchises just to make scads of money via teen angst melodrama will last? Surely there has to be a generation of directors that will begin to make movies (and shows) that are logical and science based with characters that are realistic and that we can sympathize with.

Star Wars: Jonathan Rhys Meyers In Talks For Episode VII Role?

"Star Wars: Episode VII" possibly has its first actor.
According to Latino Review, Jonathan Rhys Meyers (best known for his lead role in Showtime's "The Tudors") is talks to star in the upcoming "Star Wars" movie.

Details about what role Meyers is reportedly in talks to play are not known.

I don't generally have a problem with Meyers but I'm having a hard time picturing him in the SW universe. To me he always looks like a dirty heroin addict although he cleaned up alright for The Tudors. At any rate, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Suffice to say that this first possible choice doesn't thrill me.

Hopefully, he'll play background character #7!

this trend is like in the 80's and 90's and the endless movies with teen drama and gratuitous sex scenes (Even when it made no scripted sense to have one)--lasted until people had their fill

they need to find some little or unknown director--how about Shatner? :icon_e_smile: At least he is a fan!

Shatner is a fan now, but he sure wasn't when TOS was on, or even after when Star Trek The Movie came out. But I would much rather have his input than not. Im hoping that these forgettable Trek films from Abrams are well...forgotten. But the cast they have chosen is top notch. They have legs, but this action Trek does not. Im hoping that the next production crew keeps the cast, dumps the Enterprise GT, reconnects with the original TOS timeline and does it right, along with science and social meaning. Like...Star Trek! I would even be happy with an exact re-do of an episode in TOS, only updated. But there is no need for a "new take" on the core of Star Trek. Just on the way it looks and the stories they tell. You cant do Cold War social mirroring, because there is no Cold War like then. You could easily do The Menagerie, and even have Pike there, but he would have to still be in his wheelchair and incapacitated somehow. This Spock would make that interesting, especially with this Kirk from Pine. :)

At least Tim Burton's first Planet of the Apes flopped.:anim_59:

But I thank JJ for bringing Trek back for Paramount as a moneymaker, if not major. He has jump started the franchise again.

Did anyone notice that Abrams made sure he could bring Khan and his entire gang back in a future movie?

Can you imagine the lens flare you can get from a lightsabre duel!!

YES! And he will do it up and do it grand. :) I actually think Abrams will do a much better job with Star Wars than George Lucas did. :) think the Michael Bay/JJ Abrams rockem sockem style will enhance Star Wars and even Abrams' Jetson sound effects will be right at home with those already in the Star Wars films. We can have robots programmed like coffee shop waitresses wanting to know if people want a "cup of joe", alien cover bands in bars, and magical dinners where Jedi float fruit to their girlfriends. And I will like it because that is Star Wars. :) But he could actually mess it all up if he tries just a little bit. And I really think he cannot resist.

Why? He cant do Trek. But he can easily do Star Wars and do it right. So could Michael Bay. :)

Oh, I know! But they are a different kind of fan, and Abrams is speaking their language fluently. He can do the battles, the visual tension, the sense of excitement...its what he is made of. The first SW film A new Hope started with a space battle. They have spaceships that can do anything and be shaped in any fashion, and in SW, they can create aliens where there is no need to know what culture or planet they are from. HOWEVER, Lucas utilized some questionable stereotypes in the last set of SW movies that I think are beneath Abrams. I doubt we will see such obvious ones as Jar Jar Binks or Watto or the Trade Federation.

Abrams is going to serve up some great Star Wars. There are few things he can ruin except perhaps how Wookies look, light sabers, iconic ships like the Millenium Falcon and Imperial Cruisers and the Death Stars and Rebel Fighter X wings and such. He could ruin R2D2 or C3PO by changing how they look. Lets wait and see...

Oh I agree, his "style" will suit SW more than ST, don't get me wrong. SW favours "action/adventure" over moralistic quandaries, it is a part of SW. To say SW is devoid of moralization however, would be quite false.

One hopes not, we don't need such stereotypes anymore.

If the "rumours" are to be believed, none of these things will play a big part.
I don't believe rumours however

I just hope that Abrams Star Wars is a brand new set of characters and scenarios. This way it will be far less disappointing than if he messes with established characters -- unless of course he has Jar Jar Binks meet a horrific, painful, violent end. In that case he can go full tilt. ;)

No idea why it posted twice. But yes, it's worth saying twice for sure. :anim_59:

I've just been so disappointed with remakes lately that I'm wary of what might happen with SW. The thing that Abrams has going for him though is that Lucas messed up his own stuff so bad in the prequels that anything new has to be an improvement.
